I've never seen it. I've heard great things. But what about the DVD extras? Worth getting now? Or should I wait for the supreme, outrageous, Special Edition DVD to be released at a later date?
|
I enjoyed the film enough to plan on buying both. The current edition should be waiting for me when I get back home...
|
Does this have any extra stuff? Anyone know?
|
There's a "making of" featurette, 7 articles of Crowe's from his "Rolling Stone" days, two trailers, production notes, cast/crew bios, and a "Fever Dog" music video.

Cool dvd, great movie.

Just got this DVD, without ever seeing the movie before, just went on how so many people said how good the movie was, and they were all right :)
Only watched it once... it has DTS and DD5.1 sound, I used DTS and it sounded great, actually felt/sounded like a concert the first time the band played live, it was really cool. Jason Lee was great in it too, always liked in in the View Askew movies, had no idea he could sing good too :) Kinda wierd though that there was no audio commentary, I think this is the first DVD I ever got that didn't have one. I don't always listen to the commentaries, but still, was kinda expecing it to have one :) Overall I'd say it's a great DVD to own, and it's still on sale at Best Buy :) |
I had never seen this movie either, I got it from buy.com on Saturday and have watched it 3 times since then. I absolutely love it and am glad I didn't wait for the SE which I am looking even more forward to now.

If you missed the 70s or can't remember them - get this dvd - it will bring it all back - great soundtrack.
|
Just rented it last night and watched it. Definately worth checking out, but I'm going to wait and buy the film when the SE version comes out. It appears that it will be a directors cut.,..with commentary. Cameron Crowe is a very talented filmmaker, I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say about making the film...since this was such a personal one for him.:D

ill get both, loved it so much i can't wait for the se. shoulda been best picture

This is another one of those movies I missed during its original theatrical run, but pre-ordered the DVD. Yeah, we all know that this release is a lot more humble than what we were originally promised, but the final overall package is about average for a DVD nowadays. In other words, it's more than movie-only, but T2/Fight Club this ain't. As this film is based on Cameron's Crowe's own coming-of-age story, it does scream for a director commentary. Still, if you're one of those people that loves to watch "Behind The Music", this film is definitely for you. As a matter of fact, VH-1 ought to consider doing a "Behind The Music" treatment for Stillwater. I'd watch it!
Buying advice: Buy it, borrow it, or at least rent it. I don't think another movie will come along for a while that hits the kind of notes that Cameron Crowe does with "Almost Famous". Then check back in 2002 for the SE. |
Just saw this movie tonight in the theatre and it was excellent.
I saw that amazon.com (and also imdb's listing) said that the DVD had 30 extra minutes of footage and a commentary -- this DVD does not include those. All of the information on amazon says that Cameron Crowe was too busy filming Vanilla Sky and the studio didn't want to wait to release the DVD. Someone mentioned in an amazon review that Crowe has a 4 hour cut of the movie in mind for later release. I want to get the DVD, but dont' want to have to get it again later! (Too tempting, since I have a Circuit City gift card here waiting to buy something...) |
A rather tepid, forgetable film if you ask me. Despite Cameron Crowe's considerable talents plus, overall, an exceptional cast, this film never reached critical mass. Oh yea, Kate Hudson. What did I miss? THAT performance was worthy of an Academy Award nomination? Oh, but I forget.
Angelina Jolie won last year. Pathetic. |

Pathetic. 1. gave a good performance 2. by being in a supporting role further enhanced the value or the meaning of the more major roles 3. also enhanced the significance of the film more than any other supporting players? Kate would get my vote. |
I rented it just after it arrived in stores. It's okay, but needs the commentary track to make it worth purchasing.
|
A great, great movie. Extras are icing, this is an essential purchase as is - everyone should own a copy.

It's a great coming of age movie, one that (I was born in 1962) I identify with a lot. Cameron Crowe did a fantastic job.
|
|
Maybe I'm too young, but I couldn't even sit through the whole movie. To each his own, I guess.
|
Great movie, One of Crowe's best
Overall it was a very good movie, especially for us who unfortunately did not live through the 70's. Great acting and spectacular music. Although the DVD has its weakpoints (No commentary, some articles from Cameron Crowe when he was with Rolling Stone), the movie is what carries it along. The much anticipated Director's Cut is out and with 2 DVD's, it looks to be a huge success for this well made film.
|
The Dir Cut of this movie is one of my favorite DVD's now. It's 39 minutes longer, has a couple deleted scenes, tons of extras, commentary by Crowe and his mom and a 7-song disc of Stillwater songs.
