Any opinions on the DVD recently released? There are surprisingly few details available. Even IMDb does not list the DVD info. Thanks.

This DVD has no special features, just a Theatrical Trailer. The only reason i bought it was becuase Keanu Reeves is my favorite actor and i collect his movies. Besides that, it was a pretty decent movie, i mean it was made in 1986 so its kind of old and what can you expect. As you know, its about a group of punk thug kids in which one of them kills one of ther girls in the group for almost no reason. After that the group of kids decide whether to help the murderer or turn him in. Its a pretty ok movie, ill tell u to rent it or something first before you invest your money in it.

I watched my copy the other night & was quite pleased with the picture quality. It was not a big budget movie but it looks the best that I have ever seen it. It was also the first time I ever saw it in wide-screen which was great!

The sound was mono if I remember correctly but it was clear. The trailer is the R-rated trailer & it is nice to have. They are some little trivia notes on the back of the box but that is it as far as extras are concerned (which was a little disappointing).

I really enjoy this movie b/c it seems so real. I grew up in a lower middle class/upper poor neighborhood around the time this movie was filmed & it shows perfectly what a lot of kids were like at that time. The dress, attitudes, music, etc. were caught perfectly. Crispin Glover overacts as usual but he is so much fun to watch. The acting from Reeves and the others is pretty good with the exception of the woman playing his mother.

This movie is not for everyone's taste & I would recommend renting before buying.

I bought this one sight-unsen and was quite pleased. Kept my interest the whole time and I'll definetly watch it again.

His character was on speed.

I understand that but if you have seen Crispin in any other movies, he always overacts.

To clarify:

Crispin was on speed. Hey, someone showed me his (he made a album, yep) CD about 10 years ago... Weird...

This movie is great. Dennis, Crispin, the kid who whacked him with chucks... yepp..

Actually, Glover's character wasn't supposed to be on speed. IIRC, the shots in which he pops pills were added in an attempt to explain Layne's manic behavior. The script didn't call for him to act that way; Glover's over-the-top performance forced the filmmakers to adapt the movie. Otherwise, the presence of such a spaz amongst all those laid-back stoners made no sense...

River's Edge
 

In the dark days of the '80s, I was already living underground. There was nothing to do, nowhere to go, no jobs, Reaganomics, punk was dead, etc. Then I saw RIVER'S EDGE. It's one of the best black comedies of the past 20 years and one of the best teenage movies ever made. It's bleak and takes its time to explain why it is so, unlike many films. Thus, I was thrilled to hear it was being released on DVD. It's been out of print for so long that I thought I was doomed to watch it forever in crappy video and laserdisc. It's exciting to watch it in widescreen without any laser rot or tape hiss and decent 2.0 Dolby sound.

The transfer itself looks good aside from some minor scratches and grain. Crispin Glover, as the speedhead Lane, is so over the top and megalomaniacal that you don't know whether to have compassion for him, laugh at him, or feel contempt for him. It's not bad acting, it's good casting. He brings an innate strangeness, a queer moodiness to the character and the film. Also, this is vintage Dennis Hopper--bitter, mordant, and witty. This and BLUE VELVET are companion pieces. He hasn't reached this level since and I don't think he will ever again. Watching Glover and Hopper together is downright hysterical and bizarre (see for example the first time Lane goes to Feck's for some weed).

The script shines--it's smart, metaphorical, and unsentimental, aside from some odd narrative choices such as the fact that Feck gives away weed for free. But such eccentricities enhance the film rather than detract from it. The quirkiness of the dialogue (many classic one-liners), the dreariness of small-town America, and the pace of the film add to the surreal atmosphere while simultaneously grounding the film in teenage melancholy. The gothic imagery is absolutely beautiful: check out the scene when Lane dumps the body in the river by himself. The silhouette and the sky remind me of those early Mondrian paintings of trees.

The soundtrack was a major selling point for me at the time. It's somber and mournful when it's not cranking some classic early '80s metal that was truly cutting edge at the time. My only complaint about the film as a whole is the use of some early '60s soul on the soundtrack, which doesn't work at all.

My friends and I still recite classic lines from it all the time. Who knew a film could look and feel so vital? How often does a film about teenagers get it right? Worth every penny of the $15 you'll pay for it. An American classic. Too bad Tim Hunter hasn't done anything worthwhile since (aside from a great "Twin Peaks" episode). But he can be forgiven. After all, he wrote another great American teen flick called OVER THE EDGE a few years earlier. It's time to reassess the American teen-flick genre. RIVER'S EDGE sits near the top.
