I really like this movie. I heard it was one of those love it hate it films. Well I loved it. I rented it Friday from BlockBuster, then bought it yesterday. If you like Se7en and any other film that fits the serial killer bill then you'll enjoy this film. The visuals are incredible durning the subconsious parts. The dvd is outstanding too. The video is excellent. There are plenty of scenes were the colors will come out and slap you, they are so real. The audio is great as well. If you can find it for a good price I suggest you pick it up!!

Thanks for the review, I've always been intrigued since I know a few things about the director, Tarsem Singh who's an alumnus at my college.

Visually Stunning!!!

It reminded me of a Tool Video. It made you FEEL psychotic. Plus the extras are pretty neat too!

chsidwel 12-27-00 02:25 PM

The extras were amazing. I didn't get a chance to listen to the full commentary yet, but the interviews with cast and crew shed a lot of light on the movie and its movie making process. I had heard lots of bad reviews here and from friends. So, I didn't have very high expectations going into it. But I really enjoyed. My wife even liked it. She didn't see the deleted scenes though....

Visually stunning, cliched, generic story, lousy acting, flat-out ripoff of numerous NIN and Marilyn Manson videos.

Big Quasimodo 12-29-00 03:27 PM

This was one of those films where the trailer was better than the film. There were some interesting visual scenes, but the story was poor and was not well developed. Without going into spoilers, there were plotlines that were hinted at, but not developed, throughout the movie. Vincent D'Onofrio and Vince Vaughn got decent reviews, although Vaughn did not impress me. Jennifer Lopez was weak, but nice to look at...some gratuitous underwear scenes.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this a 3. To compare it to Seven is a big stretch - sure, they both have serial killers...but so do 100 other movies.

The trailer was better than the movie....

Not bad, for an hour and half music video w/o music http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif If you are looking for something more than that I'd keep looking http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Gallant Pig 01-01-01 12:17 AM

This movie has music (it's called a score) and it's also a pretty good film. Watch it more than once and check out the commentaries.

Adam Tyner 01-01-01 11:28 AM

Nice disc, mediocre film. I was really enthusiastic about "The Cell" when I first saw it theatrically, but seeing it again on DVD was a let-down. Much like "Jurassic Park" (at least for me), once the 'wow!' factor wears off, there's not much else left to enjoy.

Ridiculous Lucky Captain Rabbit King! Lucky Captain Rabbit King Nuggets are for the youth!

MattParksII 01-01-01 11:41 AM

Extraordinarily average. The disc is visually impressive, but the story itself is extremely weak. You might as well watch it with the sound turned off.

Cornfed 01-01-01 03:38 PM

Don't listen to it with the sound turned off when you can listen to the isolated score. I've seen worse movies. I wouldn't buy it. I may rent it again someday though.

gusamo 01-01-01 07:26 PM

Visually stunning, but not much of a story. It is a lot like the video games that are made these days. Visually they are great, but not much substance.

It was ok. nothing more. the visuals where great! but the story sucked!

Cornfed 01-02-01 06:30 AM

My father, the genius, rented and watched this movie last night. Today, he said "That Cell movie was kinda different but it had a really good plot." I said "It had no plot." He then murmured something about it being a 'classic mystery.' This coming from the same man that said 'Armageddon is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet.'

Gallant Pig 01-02-01 05:34 PM

No plot?

A serial killer is captured, he is catatonic, there is only one way to find out where his last victim is... go into his mind. Although it is a little derivative of The Silence of the Lambs, it works really well is is quite original in its own right.

Anthony Soprano 01-02-01 10:28 PM

dude, i totally did not dig this film

One of the most intelligent horror movies ever made. To understand another human beings inner thoughts, feelings, secrets and fears has always been a dilemma since Watson began what we today call psychology. In this quality movie you can get a possible scenario on what researchers of the mind is work on today with virtual reality technology. Being a student of psychology, it made the movie even more intense when the themes and story was based on real theories and present research. I can be hard to understand for the person who has not studied this, but keep an open mind and you can view it from your own thoughts, feelings, fears and secrets. Not a movie for people who is going through something traumatic or suffers from severe posttraumatic stress disorder of similar background. One of my personal favoirites this year, and Roger Ebert ranked it 6th of all the movies in 2000. See it and I hope you enjoy it.

I thought the movie was just stupid. It's a movie with an interesting premise and cool cinematography but its plot just falls flat. I felt I watched the whole movie for nothing, as the case was solved competely without the help of what Lopez was doing most of the movie. It has some cool, disturbing images, but they're pretty much what what make up the movie on their own as, like said above, this is a style over substance movie.

It is definately not one of the "most intelligent" horror movies ever made, or even of the past few years. I found it rather insipid; it could have been much, much better. And my dad who saw it with me- and is good at pointing out stupid movies- agreed.

I'd say IGN's review (http://movies.ign.com/review/4081.html) sums up my feelings the best. They gave it a 5/10 by the way.

I read the review of the movie, and they mentioned that she was a child psychologist. However, she was a social worker who used to work with children and had the extraordinary talent to get in contact with "lost" children. Demon, you have every right to think it is a stupid movie, but we tend to call things stupid when we do not understand, and that is ok. Because there are many things in the world I do not have a good grasp about, but psychology is fortunately one of the things that I am good at. I remain strong with what I said, "One of the most intelligent horror movies ever made." Besides, just because your Dad says a movie is stupid, it is necessary not that way. Maybe you should come with me to work one day and meet some of the abused children I see. Some of them have been molested, beaten until their intestines have broken, burned with torches, and other things that is unspeakable. Maybe, you would see the movie in a different light, if you saw what I have seen. The reality of child abuse is horrid, and if you want to call it stupid. I hope you never will hit your future children, because they are not miniature adults that perceive things as we do. How would you see yourself as an eight year old, if you were to be raped over and over again for about three hours, and simultaneously being promised that you would get killed if you told anyone? Moreover, at the age of eight, you have just come to the understanding of what death means. I know, it is awful what some people do. I just want to help the children that have these problems, and to do that you have to understand how the child is perceiving the world. Well, tell your Dad that he should think of what is stupid, and what he does not understand. You take care Demon (wonder why you have that name), and if you watch the Cell again try to understand how it might have been for you if you were in his shoes. http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, I just saw this last night and I thought it was fascinating. It's easy to understand the reactions from this film, one's either gonna love it or hate it. I think the incredible visuals will garner much of the credit for the film's allure but there is a strong premise to the film that's easy to overlook.

BTW, I've seen visual similarities from The Cell in his other commercial works: a Nike commercial called Good vs. Evil, and R.E.M.'s video Losing My Religion.

demon 01-05-01 02:55 PM

DVD Smurf- that's all nice and good that you appreciate the horrors of child abuse and molestation, as I do, but it's totally irrelevant as to what makes The Cell a bad movie. It doesn't save it from its (mostly) mediocre acting and bad plot with holes that make the Grand Canyon look like a pot-hole. And no, just because my dad and I (who I saw the movie with) think the movie wasn't that good doesn't make it true, but we are people who are able to look past the visual flare and cool atmosphere of a movie and instead appreciate what truly makes a movie good. And 'good' The Cell was not.

quote:
You take care Demon (wonder why you have that name),

Ooo, I feel the buuurn...I first used it on AOL when I was younger because it's one letter away from my name, and have used it ever since.

quote:
and if you watch the Cell again try to understand how it might have been for you if you were in his shoes.

Once again, that would in no way help the fact that the movie and its plot is extremely flawed. But what else was I supposed to expect from an MTV music video director or whatever he is.
