I was wondering how the DVD is for this Cameron Crowe film. I've been seeing it at Wal Mart on sale and I wanted to pick it up but the box says "Standard Version". I checked Amazon and they have it listed as having both Widescreen and Pan and Scan. I've heard rumors of a special edition coming. Any truth to that?

Hmmm, that's perplexing because my wife's copy of SINGLES says "Standard Version", with a small text explanation, followed by "Widescreen Version"--in other words, it has both. I'm virtually certain there is no "Standard Version"-only DVD of this title, so you may want to give the packaging a closer look.

As far as the DVD goes, I found the picture to be somewhat softer and murkier than the typical title, but this is likely due more to the low-budget of the movie than the transfer itself. It matches the grunge aspect of the film well. The audio is nice, especially during the songs, but it isn't GLADIATOR (but you knew that, right?). There are a couple of deleted scenes (which also appeared on the LaserDisc) and the theatrical trailer in anamorphic. Here's a strange kicker--the trailer is 2.35:1 and the film proper is 1.85:1!!! The framing appears pleasing in different ways on both, so I assume this must be a Super35 film, though that seems odd given the low budget. Anyone have any real knowledge on this aspect to the film?

I strongly disliked this movie but I can't really say why. Just one of those things.
