Does the "special edition" have enough good stuff on it to justify replacing the original disk?

It's probably just me, but I cannot stand Matthew Broderick in this film. I can't watch his awful acting. He has this quality of always looking frightened, and that smarmy voice of his is pathetic.Morgan Freeman and Denzel are great, why did they cast so poorly for the main part?
|
I thought Broderick was well-cast in this movie because he's got a frightened look all the time and has that weak voice. I thought it emphasized how unsure his character was.

He came off exactly as he should have for his character.....Great movie and great acting by all involved. http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ------------------ THE 13TH WARRIOR OF THE OTHER FORUM/CODE NAME: LYNCH/TEAM 7 Jules Winfield's Other Forum Brother...... http://www.dvdtracker.com/~djones6746.asp "You know Andy...I never thought it would come to this....Mayberry....Gateway to danger." Now of course the question is did Broderick pull it off because he is a good actor, or did he just luck into a role that fit his incompetence http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/confused.gif http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/tongue.gif http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif

If you can shut out his past movies and truly become involved with this movie and how his character fits into it....Broderick really did a good job with his part!!! http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ------------------ THE 13TH WARRIOR OF THE OTHER FORUM/CODE NAME: LYNCH/TEAM 7 Jules Winfield's Other Forum Brother...... http://www.dvdtracker.com/~djones6746.asp "You know Andy...I never thought it would come to this....Mayberry....Gateway to danger." I agree that Broderick did an excellent job in the film portraying his character. If he or someone else had portrayed the role as being a stronger more sure type of personality it wouldn't have worked!
|
The only problem I have with Broderick is he has that Robbie Benson perpetual 13 year old look. So I have trouble believing his characters are old enough to do what they do in his movies.

does anyone have more detailed info on the extra features?
Because the german( european) Collectors Edition is a single disc including: *anamorphic picute( PAL needs more space than NTSC -> higher resolution) *english D5.1 *three(!) additional Dolby Surround tracks *an Dolby 4.0(?) track *audiocommentary *deleted scenes *a couple of trailers *a 45 min featurette(The True story of glory continues) *a 20 min. making of ( Glory, the making of history) * 8 min. "Voices of Glory" all I know that is more on the US Version is this commentary/shapes-whatever thing, where you see the director talking! But I cannot imagine that this eats more space on the disc than three D 2.0 tracks and one D 4.0 . So, are these other features longer? Or are there more? ------------------ Why am I doing this while I could play DOOM? [This message has been edited by ronald (edited January 19, 2001).] |
I'm working on a review right now of this disc. It is a 2 DVD special edition with a very nice audio/video presentation on disc 1, along with an audio commentary from director Zwick as well as a picture-in-picture commentary from Zwick, Broderick and Freeman.
The second disc offers a full-frame presentation as well as additional special features. The additional special features include a documentary, featurette, original promotional featurette, deleted scenes, theatrical trailers, talent files and production notes. I will have a full-length review with more details done soon. I haven't worked my way through all of the features, but so far I think what I've seen is very good. Great movie, but why the crappy cover?
|
Has anyone seen this one yet that can compare the pictre quality of this ne to the original. I know this is anamporphic and the other isn't but, how does it look otherwise? I know this is a dangerous thing to say around here, but I don't care about the extras all that much. If I'm going to replace my copy with this one, it has to be because of the picture and audio quality.
|
The extras are a nice touch, but it has no replay value. One listen to a commentary is usually enough for me. I really don't see a difference in video quality, but if you need the anamorphic format then that would be reason enough to buy this disk.
|
Personally I would have thought the fact this one isn't a flipper would be enough. That's the reason I didn't buy the first one... JMO

I bought this one soon as it came out.. I've been planning to get the regular version then I found out this was coming out, so I waited for it instead.. really nice movie, sounds and looks great and the extras are cool.. and I like how the second disc has the regular full screen version.. nice for mom who doesn't understand why there has to be "those black bars in every movie" :)
|
Waiting eagerly for it. :)
