I just watched The Cell and there were innumerable pauses/glitches and static pops which seemed to be worse in the first half of the film. Has anyone else experienced this or do I have a defective disk? FWIW I have a Sony 550D player and a Marantz 9000 receiver.

You probably got a defective disk. The Cell played fine (picture and sound) on my Toshiba SD1600.

Same player, same results, played just fine.
