My favorite films on DVD with directors commentary are The Usual Suspects, The Sixth Sense, The Killer and Hard Boiled, and Young Frankenstein.

The director's commentary on The Usual Suspects is not only funny but he and the screewriter are in awe of the performances, particuarly Gabriel Byrne and Kevin Spacey.

On the Sixth Sense we see not only how the secret of the movie was also how heartbreaking it was the the director to cut some scenes from the movie.

And what can I say about John Woo? He not only talks about the difficulty in setting up some of those action scenes, and packs praise on his stunt coordinator, but explains how Chinese culture influenced the content and making of the films.

Mel Brooks is great at describing what was going on on the set and in the script processs on Young Frankenstein. He laughs at a lot of the jokes and is in love with the cast. I do wish that he and Gene Wilder did the commentary but there an interview with Wilder and the cast on the DVD.

Can you guys recommend any other films with commentary? I'm pretty dissapointed that none of Quentin Tarantino's or Woody Allen's films come with commentary. But I am looking forward to buying Dogma, Chasing Amy and Clers to hear Kevin Smith

Mallrats has a great commentary as well as Clerks and Chasing Amy....Can't wait to hear Dogma.

Out of my collection of around 65 or so I think those are the only commentaries I've sat all the way through. I'm trying to get around to the others someday.

One tip though....Stay away from Tim Burton's commentaries....He will put you to sleep for sure.

I'm not a big fan of audio commentaries, probably because I'd don't have the time to listen to them. Of the ten or so I have listened to, Roger Ebert's Dark City commentary was by far the best. He gave a very detailed and interesting perspective on this great film!

Any one that calls themselves a fan of ALIEN really MUST listen to Ridley Scotts audio commentary track. VERY informative & full of great stories , and secrets.
I have not gotten around to it yet, but I'm sure the James Cameron stuff on T2 & the ABYSS are going to be very technical & informative.

TIP: I like to record the audio tracks onto MiniDisc & listen to them when I travel by train or plane on business trips. This way, you can really "listen" to the details of the film.

*This really only works with those movies you know inside out, shot for shot, in your head.

Thanks for the input and now that I have a CD-RW on my computer, I can download the audio to a disc. Thanks for the tip.

I forgot to mention the audio track for Fight Club, which features Brad Pitt, Ed Norton and David Fincher. I though I was the only one who thought the movie wasa comedy but listening to these three point out the jokes and laugh amongst themselves validated my opinion.

And talk about taking a snooze, that guy on The Mummy was boring as hell.

I'm getting ready to buy Kentucky Fried Movie, Brazil, The Kevin Smith movies, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Good Will Hunting and As Good At It Gets for the commentary. I'm really sorry to hear that Tim Burton is boring because I was looking forward to buying Pee Wee's Big Adventure to hear him and Paul Reubens.

Paul Thomas Anderson is good on Hard Eight and Boogie Nights, esp. Boogie Nights (EW noted it as being one of the best commentaries on their top 50 best dvds list)

The commentaries on Elite's Evil Dead disc are really great too.
