I was looking at getting the non-Criterion version of Brazil on DVD through Columbia House.

Anyone have an opinion on just how BAD the regular (non-Criterion) version is?

Thanks.

I did not like this movie at all. I had and ebayed the Criterion version. I would rent it first if you haven't seen it yet.

No, no, no...you musn't buy the bare-bones one, even if it is to fulfill your CH account. Brazil is, in my opinion, a great movie, and the Criterion version is one of the best DVDs out there. spend the extra bucks, get the CC Brazil, and fulfill the CH account with something else.

I think that Brazil is an incredibly marvelous film... and I own the Criterion version and am extremely delighted with it. However, if you've never seen Brazil, then you should probably get the Universal version. It is listed on Amazon.com as being 131 minutes so it isn't the horrid "Love Conquers All" 92 minute version that was released in the US.

If you end up enjoying the film, you can always spring for the CC version, and give the barebones disc as a gift.

I'm sorry, when I posted the original topic message, I was late for an appointment and didn't explain myself.

I really enjoyed Brazil, but was wondering just how bad the transfer is on the non-Criterion version. And are there any rumblings of a remasterd non-Criterion version coming out?

(of course I'm trying to justify NOT spending the bucks on the Criterion version. But if it comes to that, I spring for it.)

Thanks again.

You probably know, but in case you don't... The Criterion edition is not anamorphic either.

As far as the movie goes, both editions are exactly the same, content wise, the Criterion just has a slightly better transfer (and lots more extras, if that that matters to you.)

Frankly I think that the non-Criterion version had one of the worst transfers I've ever seen. Very grainy. Seems to me that maybe the master copy they made the disk from was bad since there are scenes that are out of focus. I loved the movie, hated the non-Criterion DVD. But maybe the Criterion version is better, I have yet to see it.
