One of the great 70s movies and a fantastic script from Robert Towne before he started writing junk like Tequila Sunrise, The Firm, Days of Thunder, Armageddon and MI2. A movie that you cannot appreciate on network TV as it’s cut to bits because of the non-stop profanity in much the same way as the great Midnight Run is bowlderised, so a DVD purchase for both of these movies is essential.

If you’re asking more about the movie as opposed to the DVD, your post would probably be better in Reviews.

If you don’t already have this flick, buy it tomorrow.

Outstanding drama if you like Nicholson, but I might be biased, I have every Nicholson dvd from Easy Rider to Wolf. Randy Quaid is also excellent and turns in a great performance. The disc is 1.85:1 and 16x9 enhanced but is a little grainier than most released by Columbia Tristar, and there are quite a few film scratches but they aren't really too distracting. OK then, I'm gonna order the R1 DVD. Can you tell me what's the picture quality like on the DVD? I'm sure it's a great movie and Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors. About Midnight Run - haven't seen that either. I would order that too, but it's non-anamorphic so I'll wait for the Collector's Edition to be released (I hope this will happen soon).

I can't really say anything about the film (and DVD) that jonathan.e and Tuco haven't already covered. It is excellent and represents some of the best work of everyone involved, including director Hal Ashby. As Tuco noted, the transfer is grainy and has some scratches, but I consider The Last Detail a "must-own" movie, so I'm happy to have the DVD.

Gotta agree: it's such a great movie that the transfer won't matter.

Also worthwhile for a brief glimpse of Gilda Radner...
