Criterion is supposed to be releasing Lars von Trier's "Element of Crime" in a few weeks. It sounds interesting, but I haven't seen it. Anyone familiar with this?

Haven't seen it but I'm interested in it
as well. Von Trier is very good at creating
dark, twisted atmospheres a la David Lynch.
From what I could tell from IMDB, this film
seems to fit in this category. Now if they
could only release The Kingdom mini-
series on DVD!

I've seen it (although on a crappy VHS copy). I wasn't all that into it - it wasn't nearly as funny or interesting as THE KINGDOM. It definitely creates a dark, intriguing atmosphere/reality, but didn't seem to do very much with it. Kind of like a less interesting BLADE RUNNER in some ways. (A film which I've never gotten deeply into, either, so that may also color my impression. I'm a HUGE Von Trier fan, though, and I'd say this is by far my least favorite out of it, ZENTROPA, THE KINGDOM I + II, BREAKING THE WAVES, and THE IDIOTS.) Still, I think I'm going to give it another try when it comes out on DVD. I know some people who worship this film, and I'm willing to admit that I could be off-base.

eXcentris, ditto that on the KINGDOM. I would love to own a box set of that a la the DECALOGUE set.

I rented it first and I'm glad I did -- found if fairly dull and opressively orrange.

Read the reviews here and here for knowledgable opinions of the film and the DVD.

Great film, great disc. The extra documentary is essential for von Trier fans.

I watched this the other night, and wasn't impressed.

The atmosphere and mood was interesting, but everything else failed miserably.

It wasn't much of a crime story, thriller, or even a character study.

It wasn't much of anything.

I have a great deal of patience when it comes to slow moving movies, but this was extremely hard to sit through.

I recommend renting it first.
