If so, how is it ?

Mine's on it's way.

I, also, am waiting anxiously for this one. I have yet to find any reviews. However, one of my good friends at the Library of Congress Film Preservation Center (where Disney keeps their pre-1950's films, btw) got a phone call from Scott MacQueen, the Head of Preservation at Disney, urging him to pick it up. Scott personally supervised the restoration of the film and is quite proud of it. Several little bits were added back in to make it as close to the original release as possible. The only thing that was not added back in was the "Picaninny Centaurs". Scott and the other folks at Disney felt that it was truly offensive beyond belief and opted not to put the shots back in. As much as I am a completist, I must agree on this choice. Scott felt that the shots only served to detract from what was, and is, a remarkable film. I don't know much else about the release except that Scott said there was something like 12 hours of supplemental materal all together, so this should keep us fans busy for quite a while. To see more of Scott's great work, find a copy of the special LD release of BEDKNOBS and BROOMSTICKS. Almost an entire half-hour of material has been restored to the film, making for a wonderful new take on this cool film. It's not on DVD or VHS, sad to say, so good luck finding it. It's worth the search, though. Hope this was of some interest to you.

I was wondering about the "Picaninny Centaurs" cut in "Fantasia" while watching the DVD last night. I did notice one point in the "Pastoral Symphony" segment when a zoom happened and the frame got very grainy, so I think this was where the shot was original located. Do you know at what time in the film that this alteration happened?

I was very, very pleased with the first disc of the anthology. Picture quality is very good and sound quality is fine; the extras are really a treat - both commentaries are very informative (one is a newly recorded one, the other is Walt Disney interviews hosted by a different person) and the "Making Of" documentary is phenomenal.

DVD Review: Fantasia

I'm currently working on a review of Fantasia 2000.

I have the 1991 VHS release of Fantasia and I was just wondering what segment the Picaninny Centaurs are in and what exactly are the things? Thanks.

NO??? I seen numerous posts about this missing scene that was on this one, and not on that one, and this is supposed to be the uncut version. This would be an excelent easter egg to hide under the circumstances.Let me know if you find it.

I doubt they will put it back, or in a easter egg. remember this is one of the crown achievements of disney. they want NO and i repeat, NO controversay over this dvd. they don't want the protest to come down on this one.. so that racist scene is GONE for good. and by the way.. arn't the extras on it enough? why does everyone want a damn easter egg?

Does seeing a racist remark make a movie any more better? you must love to watch teen movies just for the t&a huh? well listen, if you really want to see it that bad, just go to a used video store, and find a copy on vhs that was before 1991 i believe, and watch it. sheesh.

I hate to disappoint you folks, but there has NEVER been an uncut version of FANTASIA available on video. The first and only video release was the one released in the early 90's. The shots (not entire scenes, mind you) in question were removed I believe back in the 60's. Having seen stills from these shots, I can assure you that they do nothing but tarnish what is otherwise a very fine film. I know that morbid curiousity makes us fanboys want to see every inch of a film that was shot, but it just would not be worth the trouble that Disney would get into for releasing the shots. Truly. Be happy with the wonderful discs they've released and concentrate your energies on something a little more productive.

From IMDB:

The original "Pastoral Symphony" segment featured extremely politically-incorrect "Aunt Jamima"-type black girls who perform servant duties for the female centaurs. For the 1990 re-release, while some scenes were completely cut (one of the reasons why the movie required a new score), other cels were magnified so the black centaurs are off-screen. Not even the laserdisc special edition of Fantasia includes these scenes and Disney has gone to great lengths to deny these scenes ever existed. A brief account of this story and at least one actual cel photograph are presented in the book "Cartoon Confidential" by Jim Korkis and John Cawley (Malibu Graphics Press).

A B&W picture from the censored scene can be seen here (look under Fantasia): http://www.informatik.uni-frankfurt..../Features.html

Dayum!
I just saw that picture, and that is really
bad. I doubt taking those scenes out will
make the film any worse, or better, than it
is now. I saw the rerelease in '90 in the
theaters, and do not remember seeing that
part.
I still don't own the dvd, it's being held
until next weeks crop of dvds at amazon, but
I really can't wait for it.
BTW, is F2000 really any good? From what I
can tell, it has pretty ugly CGI and features
lots of floating/flying creatures. I didn't
see it in the theaters, cuz I didn't think it
would be any good. Was I wrongo?

Neitzl: I saw Fantasia 2000 five times when it was in IMAX release and loved it. I guarantee you will be able to find at least one segment that you really enjoy (the Firebird segment alone is worth the price of admission). I think the film really took a bad rap and is actually quite wonderful. Yes the selections they chose could have been more daring, but it's a lot harder to be daring with classical music these days than it was in the first half of this century.

They should have just gone in and changed the skin color to white, then no one would have cared.

Casino, I hope you were being sarcastic. Blatant characature of any race is wrong. Black or Caucasian or whoever. Should Disney deny its existence? No. It's representative of the culture in America at the time the film was made. We should never forget what a racist country we were and still are somewhat. However, the film needs to be seen. Those few shots truly added nothing to the film and if re-added, would only serve to alienate the viewing public. Acknowledge the past, but don't pander to it in the name of completeness. Now, the re-dubbing of Deems Taylor's narration is another story. I feel that it would have been better to re-record just the sections that are missing rather than dumping the whole thing. His narration is as much a part of the film as the animation is and deserves some respect. What really kills me is that the new narrator still says, "I'm Deems Taylor." Now that's funny!

Maids are a fact of life, white, red, black, whatever; re-color them and no one will know or care. Since when is being a maid degrading or racist?

Making them white would be the most sensible and easy solution. I mean really, if these characters had been white all along (which they should have been)would there have been an uproar? No, so make them white.

Yeah, they used MTV-style quick-cut editing to trim the film to a brisk 84 minutes for today's audience. And they redubbed the "Frankly, Scarlet, I don't give a damn" line to a more shocking "Frankly, Scarlet, I don't give a rat's f*cking a**hole" to sufficiently shock contemporary theatergoers. They also threw in some wire-fu action scenes, an evil British general, and a big CGI-laden Civil War battle scene at the climax. And Jar Jar Binks has a cameo at one point.

I'm of the opposite opinion here. The country self-censors its racist past; I think everyone could get over it and move on if we openly acknowledged it as simply a more ignorant view of humanity that, fortunately, we have overcome. By perpetually "protecting" people from racist images of long agi, we are also perpetuating the illusion that blacks should continue to feel aggrieved by a practice abolished 170 years ago.

Folks, it's just a cartoon. Gone with the Wind wasnt edited. Let me get this straight, are you saying that Walt Disney himself was a racist or his animators? This is a beuatiful looking movie, no matter what or who is in it, it is done with art and class, it's Disney for goodness sake.
