It is my opinion that Gettysburg is the only war film that was made with the military historian in mind. It doesn't get muddled with romance, and I believe it takes as little license as possible. Ted Turner wanted to get it right and I think he did. As movies go it is long...but worth it. If you know nothing about the battle you will leave the movie reasonably informed. The acting was good. I say give it a chance. Just my 2 lincolns worth.

As a visual experience? Yes, it is worth it.

As a taut war drama? No.

For the record, I am buying it, but I don't even pretend that it is a terrific film.

I thought it was a rather dull movie. Pretty boring. Only for those really interested in the era. Probably ok (but not good) for history teachers.

This was one of the films I wanted on dvd ever since I got my player. The fact that I live 30 miles from Gettysburg might have an effect on that, but its worth every penny. Great action, good acting, and a very accurate account of the battle.

The movie was based in large part on "The Killer Angels", Pulitzer Prize winning historical novel by Michael Shaara. It's an excellent book, not to be mistaken for a tedious recitation of historical events. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I can highly recommend the novel.

I would go much farther than "based in large part." It is, in fact, a visual recreation of the novel. Dialogue and action are taken almost verbatim from the novel.
