RENT IT FIRST!

It's such a bad, bad movie. Like. Horrendous. It's not funny at all. It's boring. Seems sloppily put together. WWW at least had some funny moments (and Salma http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif)

But then, my brother liked Shanghai Noon a lot, which is why he recommended the disc in the first place. Ugh. I am NEVER EVER listening to him again. He has such a different taste in movies.

I guess what I mean to say is, rent this movie. It's not for everybody. Well, you could say that for any movie http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif I thought Rush Hour was OK, and I *definitely* enjoyed watching Jackie Chan's earlier works (back when I was 7!), but Shanghai Noon is a snorefest.

ARGH I want my money back http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/frown.gif I still have so many movies I want to get, I can't believe I spent $15 on this http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/frown.gif http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/frown.gif http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/frown.gif

Comparing Shanghai Noon to Wild Wild West is Night and Day.

IMHO, Shanghai Noon is a better movie than his last outing Rush Hour(if you want to be technical his last was Gorgeous). Nonetheless, offers more action comedy, more fights and an engaging albeit a tried and true buddy story line. The movie almost fellows a similar story like Jet Li's own "Once Upon a Time in China and America(97)" but greatly differ in emotion and tone. While Chan fans will expect the usual(mandatory)stunts the movie excels because the chemistry between Chan and Wilson is genuine. I found the commentary with Tom Dey,Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan informative and engaging adding various stories on why and how things happen on the set. Deleted scenes are in 5.1 and anamorphic enchanced - I thought some of the scenes would have help develop some character motives like the scene with Fong and Drummond. Also, included are various featurettes, trailers and two games about the movie(special bonus when you complete them http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif). All in all I found the movie exciting and a enjoy to behold. This movie has a better storyline and has more action than RH.

For Jackie Chan fans - get this disc now http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/biggrin.gif - as for our casual viewers its worth renting just to see Falling Leaves and Princess Pei Pei http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif.

It's probably one of Jackie's better US movies. The production is great and it gently spoofs all of the great westerns. You must not like westerns. If you don't get the title as a wonderful pun ("shang - HIGH NOON", for the humor impared out there), you probably won't like this film.

Owen Wilson is great is what boils down to an erstaz Robert Redford role. He has some delicious lines ("Piss shirt bend bars?!?). The chemistry between he and Jackie is so very good. I do admit there is a little lacking to the movie in spots. In the theater I couldn't figure out why I felt that way. It wasn't until the DVD edition when I saw the deleted scenes that I fully understood what was missing. There are two or three deleted scenes that totally explain the subplots of the film. It's a shame a director's cut wasn't added through seamless branching or something because some of those scenes are very important (Especially Curtis Armstrong's role as Bulldog Drummond) to the development of the subplots. All in all, it's a good little time killer that probable should've been released in the fall instead of summer, where it got creamed.

I was wondering, dodobird, what Jackie Chan works were you watching when you were 7? Canonball Run? The Protector? The Big Brawl? Those don't really count as difinitive JC works.

If you don't like the disc, put it on half.com. I'm sure someone would love to have it.

Here's another positive review. I'm not a big Jackie Chan fan.. actually I haven't liked any of the (2-3 I've seen) chinese (hong kong?) films he did that were rereleased here. I really enjoyed Rush Hour, but I'm one of the few people that actually thinks Chris Tucker is funny.

I thought Shanghai Noon was a better film than Rush Hour. Owen Wilson seemed to pair better with Jackie than Tucker did. I thought the movie was funny and entertaining. I would definately recommend seeing it.

So. I give it a 3/5 stars. Definately worth a rental -- and if you liked the movie, the disc (from what I've seen) seems to be fantastic.

damn_skippy 10-21-00 07:07 PM

Yea Owen Wilson was hilarious.

Fhrx 10-23-00 02:21 AM

Give it a break. It wasn't that bad. Not as good as other Jackie Chan stuff but it was ok.

I can think of a lot worse.

Shanghai Noon is, simply, Jackie Chan's best American film. It is the only one he's made here that approaches the level of his better HK films. Of course, if you don't like Jackie Chan films, then you probably won't like this one either.

Laughing Gravy 10-24-00 06:20 PM

SHANGHAI NOON is a wonderful film. Beware of reviews from people who qualify it by saying something nice about WILD WILD WEST.

Merrial 10-25-00 10:01 AM

This is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Owen Wilson is hilarious and Jakie Chan kicks ass as always!!

Eric S 10-25-00 07:41 PM

I really enjoyed it, and it's on my buy list. However, I would recommend seeing it first (normal advice from me, I've been disappointed almost every time I bought something I had never seen).

It's definitely a funny movie if you appreciate the style of humor and don't take it too seriously. It's not fine art, but it is definitely good clean fun. And in case anyone had any doubts, the chinese drinking song is authentic.

And for the record, I thought WWW was worth renting, but wouldn't buy it, but I can't say why not. It just didn't click on some level.

Smog 10-25-00 10:31 PM

What a tired offensive script. Why would Chan choose to be in a film that trivializes the Chinese people? Owen Wilson as the deep thinking surfer/scuzz bag was ridiculous. Not a laugh to be found anywhere. The film sadly lumbers through its prepubescent script, like cheese growing green mold in the fridge. If you have a brain capable of thinking on its own, avoid this one. Utter garbage.

Fhrx 10-25-00 11:29 PM

I disagree Smog. http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/confused.gif

woo hoo

Smog 10-26-00 12:26 AM

I wasn't attempting to offend anyone. I just found the film to be pedestrian at best. No offense to anyone who enjoys it.
