Earlier this week I got advance copies of three of October's Bond DVDs, and I've now been able to write up all of them. Some quick impressions plus links for the full details:

-"From Russia With Love": the movie itself is terrific - quite possibly the best Bond of them all - and the DVD lives up to expectations for the most part. The image shows some flaws but is on a par with those of "Dr. No" and "Goldfinger". The sound is clear, solid mono, and the usual complement of extras adds to the package.

-"Diamonds Are Forever": A disappointing return for Connery but it's a generally watchable film; closer to "bad" than to "good", it's still decent. The picture looks quite strong overall, and the monaural sound seems clear and crisp. The typical mix of audio commentary, two documentaries, and trailers also features some deleted scenes, a rarity for Bond discs.

-"A View to a Kill": Not the worst Bond, but close, Roger Moore's swan-song offers a few interesting moments but usually seems forced and silly. Still, it's worth a look; any Bond is interesting to me. The DVD offers the best picture of these three and also the best sound, though the 5.1 mix features some problems. The extras compare to those of "Diamonds Are Forever".

In addition to the reviews, we should have some screenshots up soon.

I loved the first two Bond sets and am anxious as hell for the third. The only true disappointing fact about the entire DVD series is that most weren't given a 5.1 remix.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are no bad Bond movies. There are only bad Bond rip off movies (True Lies cough cough).
