Alphaville is a very auteurist, idiosyncratic film, as are all of Jean-Luc Godard films. In this one, Godard pays homage to gangster and pulp films. It is very low budget, using mid century modern design and minimal lighting to create a noir-ish rather than futuristic atmosphere. The premise is a little scattered: Agent Lemmy Caution travels from the Outlands to destroy the Alpha 60 supercomputer, using the creator's daughter, Natascha von Braun, as his guide. But the idea of independent thought and love conquering the omniscient supercomputer, Alpha 60, comes across clearly.
The picture quality is excellent, but it is a bare bones Criterion DVD. If you are looking for an introduction to Godard cinema, this is probably not a good one to start with. Fox Lorber has released a few of his films, and the transfers are very good (no extras though). Two of his more accessible films available on DVD are Pierrot le Fou and My Life to Live. However, if you are already a fan of his work, then by all means, this is worthwhile getting.
