The only John Wayne movie that I've enjoyed is "The Quiet Man." I wanted to pick up a copy on DVD, but the version that's out has an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. I couldn't find a widescreen version even in VHS. SO my question is: what aspect ratio was it filmed in? It was put out in 1952, and I thought that wider aspects were fairly standard by then, but I could be wrong.

If anyone knows of a site where I could look up such esoteric data, I'd app. you mentioning it. I tried IMDB, but had no luck.

I would guess it was filmed in Full-Frame. From the date of the film, 1952. FF is not that bad if thats what it was filmed in. I think Widscreen, etc. started about 1954 or around then, give or take a year. But I might be wrong.

Widescreen processes started in 1953, officially. The Robe was one of the very first widescreen movies. Quiet Man is 1.33.

Thanks for your help everyone. I was under the false impression that widescreen started in the late 40's, but the early 50's make more sense. Competition with TV was starting then.

Well, I'll snag me a copy then.
