I've read some reviews of this title that compared it to Fox Lorber's "Ran" with respect to transfer quality on both audio and video. I like this film (and "Ran") a lot, so I'm curious as to whether others here agree with the reviewers.

I think the transfer is fine and the audio is what I expected. The dilemma with this edition is whether it is truely the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It seems to be more like 2.10:1. I believe I remember reading that Criterion had to decide whether to crop the edges somewhat or leave an irritating line that was constant throughout. Nevertheless, if you like this film, I don't think you'll be too disappointed with Critrion's edition.

Thumbs-up for this one.
Toshiro Mifune rocks!
No complaints from me.

No complaints here. Then again I didn't think Ran was too bad, it was one of my first DVDs and I haven't watched it recently so I might have a different opinion now though http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif Also, I haven't seen the other one (from Universe I think http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/confused.gif ) but you might be able to get that one cheaper than the one from Criterion (which doesn't have any extras anyway).

Toshiro Mifune!!! Wow, I cant beleive this. I have been buying the cheap Anchor Bay titles at Bigstar has and one was Hell in the Pacific with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune for 11.99. I havent watched it yet but gave it quick looking over and it looked okay with an alternate ending. Its about an american LM and TM, Japanese, stuck on a isolated island in WW 2. I saw it back in 70's on tv and remembered it has being interesting and wanted to see it again.

An even stranger place to find him is 1941 (the comedy w/ Belushi) http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/eek.gif Thanks for the pointer though I'll have to check that one out.

BTW a quick correction on the post above, the other version of Yojimbo is by Mei Ah... http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/redface.gif

I was happy with both Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Considering how badly Toho is rumored to store their films it looks pretty good.
