Love both of these movies; just want to know how much better they may be on DVD.

I just got both of these discs the other day. Haven't had time to watch Animal House yet, but I liked 1941 a lot. It is the director's cut of the film. Many complain about the transfer of the film, but I really don't think it's that bad. Extras are outstanding: There is an excellent 102 minute documentary on the film, deleted scenes, trailer, reviews of the film, tons of advertising materials and stills. Great stuff.

Make sure you're getting the collectors edition of Animal House, not the old Pan & Scan.
I have the CE, and you wont be disappointed if you like the film. It's a little grainy, but it seems that all early John Landis films suffer from that problem. The documentary is pretty good.

Well, I should clarity: All older Landis film except Blues Brothers which looks perfect-could have been filmed last year by how good the DVD looks.

1941 was lambasted when it came out on DVD because they took no time whatsoever with the quality and it showed. In fact it was so poor the conspiracy theorists felt it was Spielbergs way of backing out of DVD. Make it crappy then not do it anymore because they didn't sell.

Ebert said that both films were worth renting/owning on DVD. He says that he's recommending them because of the extra. 1941 includes (he though) a good "making of" doc with an interview with Spielberg.

I watched Animal House last night; looks very good for a film from 1978.

Both these movies as well as The Blues Brothers are in the recently released "John Belushi Box". Just in case you were sitting on the fence, consider that you can get the box for around $50 online, a decent savings compared to buying all 3 discs.

I've watched both of these movies on DVD last week and here's my take-

Animal House looked great, and still holds up really well. The making of documentary was interesting- a great reminder on how this flick changed the lives and careers of those involved.

1941- I've always liked this movie, but the DVD did not impress me. Sure, the extras were neat- tons of pics of promo material, etc. But the transfer seems marginal to me. Outdoor scenes look hazy and undistinguished throughout, and the sound was nothing special.

These DVD's are great, however, in reminding us of the brilliance known as John Belushi.

Appreciate the info, but already have BB. Probably will get the AH on my next run on Columbia House; alas, 1941 isn't available there. Gator time anyone?

Got my AH:CE from columbia house. Not bad for a 20 year old film. I am extremely happy I added this one to my collection as it's one of my favorites.

watched my copy of the collectors edition of Animal House this weekend. great movie. sound is mono but this is not really a "sound" movie. the only thing was that the picture seemed really dark in many parts. transfer was clean but was dark.

the extra documentary is great! not really any more extras on the disc.
