Can anyone tell me which one is better buy?

Stargate is the original movie (w/ Kurt Russell). I would look for the SE version if you are interested in that; more features and it's not a flipper like the first one was. Stargate SG-1 is the series that started on Showtime a few years back, and more recently in syndication. It stars Richard Dean Anderson. It carries on the storyline from the original movie.

Both are worth it IMHO

Well, Stargate the movie isn't exactly a great film, in my opinion. It's a Devlin/Emmerich film, which means that a great idea is going to be inflicted with a great injustice. But it's not a BAD film either and at least it's got a few neat effects and Kurt Russell, which is more than I can say for the TV show, which stars MacGuyver as Kurt Russell. Granted, I've only watched 1 or 2 episodes of the series, but they were pretty lame.

As the guy above mentioned, if you're going to get it, get the SE so you won't have to flip in the middle (you also get a few minutes of extra footage, which I really didn't think added anything).

Well At least the TV show version, ifthey are using the SHOWTIME print, will have a nice full nude scene by the girl who plays James Spaderscharacterswife in the human sacrifice scene! (:

I'd get both. I like the series a lot better than the movie, but the movie is worth having as well.

I just hope they continue to bring out more volumes of the series.

I just finished skimming through the pilot (Showtime just showed it a couple of weeks ago so I didn't feel like rewatching it http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif ) and watching the first eps. It also contains the 2nd eps for a total of about 3 hours of "film" http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/eek.gif Although it is listed as "full screen" it is also "enchanced for widescreen" so on my 27" TV atleast it came across as a letterbox version http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif To bad I don't have a tape of the originals around to do a side-by-side http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/frown.gif My only major complaint is that the xfer itself is REALLY grainy in places http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/frown.gif Since I usually watch the show itself on tape and not when it comes on I've gotten used that though http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif

The features are sparse, but it does have french and spanish soundtracks (as well as subtitles). While the little book is about what you'ld expect it did contain one interesting fact; it seems the Air Force reviews all the scripts before hand to see if they are correct wrt military tactics and SOPs. OTOH if you are an "MIB" conspiracy theorist, maybe they are working as censors http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Also, I love the art work on the disc itself. I'm surprised they didn't do that on the SE version of the movie...

believe it or not, the pilot episode, when compared to the showtime broadcasted version AND the rental VHS copy, on the letterboxing, you are gaining considerable amount of info on the sides!!!! It seems the pilot was shot at 1;85 aspec ratio! Perhaps it was intended for overseas theatres (as it contains full frontal nudity)?

To add to the above-fore-mentioned,Devlin and Emerich should never again be allowed to direct/produce such lame films.
They always seem to have the ability to destroy any facinating idea for a film with campy humor and poor acting. Just my opinion.....
