Watched this DVD last night and believe me, if you want to give your AC-3 system a
workout this is one to do it! Great 5 speaker stereo, dynamite base, and a good
western movie too boot. Excellent for a $20 MSRP movie.

I recently got this movie in a trade with another DVDTalker. I've always liked the movie, but was only familiar with the VHS version which is pathetic (muddy-looking, washed out colors, and poor sound). Anyway, when the DVD arrived I didn't have very high hopes for its sound and picture quality since it is an older film. I was pleasantly surprised about both! The print used for the transfer is in extremely good condition which makes the filming locations look the way they should look -- spectacular. The video transfer is ANAMORPHIC which further enhances the resolution on the proper monitor. The soundtrack is very clean and the mastering for DD 5.1 makes frequent use of the rear surrounds. These observations were made on just a 5 minute previewing. I can't wait to take time to watch the film all the way through. This is one of the many advantages of DVD -- high quality that rekindles your enjoyment of older films.

it just sucks that there is a special edition vhs & not a special edition dvd. the vhs has 2 documentaries on it as will as unseen footage. you would think they would have done that for the dvd as well.

I agree. This is an excellent DVD. It prooves itself easily in the 1st ten minutes of the film. The scene where his home is raided shows off any sound system with the thunder of the horses and fire. His pistol practice is something to behold audio-wise.
Picture quality is awesome, with fantastic color.

I've noticed that nobody has mentioned the unbelievable collection of ten orginial trailors of great Eastwood and The Duke westerns. What a treat!

The Outlaw Josey Wales looks and sounds absolutely terrific. This puts a lot of current transfers and 5.1 movies to shame. Warner did a terrific job with this. The VHS version looks and sounds like crap in comparison. I still think Josey Wales is Eastwood's best film, better than Unforgivin IMO. For the $13 I paid for it at Best Buy, it's a steal. Not many special features, though.

Bought this yesterday after reading the reviews on this thread. Great movie and who would have thought the transfer to DVD would have been this good, especially the audio! If it wasn't for this site,I probably would have passed based on other great movies having sorry transfers. Especially when stores are practically giving this great DVD away! Thanks for the info!
