This is a stunning DVD 4-disk set. Great stories, character development, acting, production values, direction, photography -- everything is top notch.
I didn't know a thing about this series outside of having read about the accolades it has received. I saw the Gregory Peck film years ago on VHS and thought I'd take a chance on this one. I'm glad I did.
This series gives you a feeling of what it might have been like a century or so ago sailing the high seas and living through history. No high-tech gizmos here, just pure old-fashioned story-telling and character development. With all due respect to him, George Lucas could learn a thing or two from the people who made this series.
Extras include the lengthy "England's Royal Warships", a shorter promo "Making of Horatio Hornblower", and a glossary of nautical terms and definitions.
And someone correct me on this but my Toshiba 2109 registered the highest bit-rate I've come across so far for a DVD -- mostly 10mb/s! The image quality on these disks are fabulous.
Highly recommended.
