I saw this on cable the other night, not really expecting much, and hoping to fall asleep once the story/acting got waaayy too crappy.
But it turned out to be a good script with some good acting. Brendan Fraser is as likable as ever, and Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek showed great chemistry/comedic talent as his parents in the bomb shelter.
My only complaint was Alicia Silverstone's mouth. She had a freaky, tweaky thang going on with her lips and jaw, it looked like she had some bad cosmetic surgery that went horribly wrong. Everytime she came on screen, I lost track of the movie because I was fixated on her mouth!!!
And two supporting characters were awesome: Dave Foley as Alicia's roommate, and the nutty neighbor from TV's old "The Single Guy" show was hilarious as the first person who meets Brendan when he comes out of the shelter (don't want to give too much away here).
So all in all, definitely worth the rental, though probably not a purchase (the cuteness would wear off after repeated viewings).

This one surprised me too. The trailer made it look a little silly when it was first released, but it is smarter than you think. Clever story, good cast, nice DVD.

Even though I wouldn't buy it on DVD, it was pretty good.

Are we talking about the same movie here? I saw this one in the theater, and it was the most horrible movie! I just wanted to leave, but stayed in hopes of it improving. It never did! Instead, it just got cheesier and cheesier as the *story* went along.

This is interesting: the two students thought the movie sucked, though the 3 "older gents" (sorry guys! ) thought the movie was at least worth a viewing. I wonder if there were themes that appealed to an older audience.
Makes me wonder what others of either generation thought of the movie. Anyone care to cast their votes and specify which generation they fit into?

Beno,
My 3 teenagers (13-15-17) love the movie.
They watch it at least once a week. I myself..ahem...you figure out the age ...
also enjoy it. It is a harmless film. And I also liked Foley.

I'm 32 and I've seen it several times on HBO or some other movie channel. I liked the humor. It was a light comedy and enjoyable all around.
Certianly not an Academy Award winner but a nice movie.
