I remember watching Gleaming the Cube in my earlier years when I was a "skater" I would like to say that this movie had a profound impact on my youth, unfortunately I cannot. In this movie Christian Slater plays a teen skater (Brian), who hangs out with other young skaters such as Tommy Guerrero and more notably Tony Hawk (who can be currently seen in Disneys new Tarzan commercial).
After a small plane flight to find empty pools to skate in, we meet Brians goody-goody adopted Asian brother. While at work the adopted brother comes across some information that could bring an end to an internternational contraband organization so therefore is killed. The rest of the movie features Christian Slater running around town on his skateboard solving the mystery of his adopted brothers death.
I would like to tell you how this movie ended, but to be quite honest haven't gotten around to finishing it. If I remember correctly it featured a couple of gunshots and something to do with some more skateboarding.
Some of the special features include a behind the scenes look with the skaters, screen menus, and the knowledge that the movie actually made approximately $2,000,000 in the united states. The movie was theatrically released in 1988 and is currently on dvd from Artisan entertainment.

I went to see this movie opening night in the theatre! How funny is that. A whole five people were in the seats. Remember it coming on cable a few years back and they switched the name of it to "My Brother's Keeper" or something like that for some reason.

I liked this movie.
The skating was really cool. I wish I could have done some of that stuff.
How was the video quality?
And happy 1,000th!

I used to love that movie, I had recorded it off of showtime and used to watch that at least twice a week. Just for kicks, the other day my younger brother bought it on VHS and brought it over as a gag... I wonder if I'll ever tear the shrinkwrap off?

As far as credibility, "Gleaming the Cube" is slightly above "Rad" and "Thrashin'". That doesn't make it a good movie by any means, but a guilty pleasure like those others. I remember my friends and I all going to see it opening weekend. We were wondering why it was only showing in one theatre per multiplex, and only half the time in those theaters. Well, we wondered no longer afterwards. If I remember correctly, there was one somewhat violent scene in a field or something that now reminds me of the execution scene with Pesci and his brother in "Casino". Maybe Scorsese stole the idea from "Gleaming the Cube".
Anyway, the skating was very good for a mainstream movie. And Blade, I used to be able to do that stuff... okay, maybe some of that stuff... well, maybe just a few tricks... Well hell, I did get a chance to skate with Mike Vallely once, who was one of the stunt skaters in that movie.
Whoops, I forgot to mention. Besides Christian Slater, it's got Steven Baur in it as well. What the hell happened to that guy after "Scarface"?
