I had the misfortune of seeing this P.O.S. in the theaters and let me tell you this, you will be wasting your money if you get this disc. I wouldn't accept it for free, that's how bad this film sucks. It's a very very low budget, indie, nothing more than a soft-porn trying to come off as an offbeat lesbian comedy. Now, my girlfriend had heard tons of good things about this film and I had seen the preview and thought I would never see this but somehow I got dragged to it. Anyways, this pitiful attempt at a storyline, acting, and everything else associated with this film is pure GARBAGE. After the film I felt like I'd been robbed of my 15 bucks but even my girlfriend after the film said "Man, that thoroughly sucked." So before you go out and think about buying this disc, hopefully you'll have read this post and saved yourself some of your hard earned cash. I wouldn't wish this disc on anyone...well maybe a few of my enemies

I had thought about pre-ordering this a couple of weeks ago but never did. Guess I made the right decision. It's no GoodFellas hey?

I went to the video store tonight and I saw this on the shelf and had a laugh. The acting in this film is less than poor...It's a waste of perfectly good film. I believe this film was sponsored by the Canadian Film Commission and I only have one question. WHY???????? Rent it on video and be thoroughly disappointed. In no way is this anything close to Goodfellas

Soft-porn? I didn't notice that..."Bound" was more explicit and isn't considered soft-porn.

I've seen "Better Than Chocolate" and it is okay. It isn't comic genius, and the script is generally weak but the lead actresses are engaging (although I see no Oscars in the future of either) and there are some inventive musical numbers (including a tribute to Julie Christy and the more traditionally performed "I'm Not a F***ing Drag Queen").

A large part of the plot has to do with coming out, and from everyone I've talked to, as well as my own observations, "Better Than Chocolate" will be more appreciated by a gay/lesbian audience who likes films along the lines of "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss." That isn't to say it doesn't have crossover appeal, it has more of a chance of finding a receptive straight audience than most contemporary gay/lesbian films.

Another thing I liked about it was the Peter Outerbridge character, Judy, a pre-op transsexual who is in love with stuffy bookstore owner Frances (played by author Ann-Marie MacDonald). Outerbridge is the standout of the cast.

Overall: Not for all audiences, those interested in watching a coming out comedy should rent it (the DVD is good but not excellent looking, good sound, a theatrical trailer and director commentary are included).

Oops, forgot to add that the weakest part is the ending, which though concludes on a Hollywood-ish note, is sparked by events that are too predictable and try too hard to convey a message that is already evident throughout the entire film.

I'd definately call it soft porn or a really bad b-movie. It seemed these 2 women, who meet one day and are in love no less than a few hours later, were on each other throughout the whole movie. If you've seen Bound, this film is a 1 and Bound a 10. The script is horrible and so is the acting. The plot is all over the place. I've shot student films with unprofessional actors and they put these 2 actresses to shame.

I do admit to laughing at the Julie Christie and Drag Queen song but from your point of view, this film is going to be more appreciated by a gay/lesbian audience? I'm a straight male and I've enjoyed many gay/lesbian themed films but this one has got to be one of the worst ones I've seen.

That's just my 2 cents.

Yes, I think this film is going to be more appreciated by a gay/lesbian audience. That isn't to say that gays and lesbians won't say, "This is a b-movie," but there is more for them to relate to, I think. Although the rest of the script is flat-out unimpressive, the coming-out side to the story is above average in my opinion. It would have been better served by an actress with more depth, though.
