Not seen the movie yet, I am thinking buy the dvd, which I heard provides both DD & DTS. One thing I'm worrying about is the movie contains sexuality as I was informed. Is the movie too sexy to see with my family(no kids)? Is it any heartwarming? Please let me know.
Thank in advance.

Well, if I can infer from your message that you are easily offended, then yes there is a bit of sex. It's all confined to one of the middle segments where a composer plays the violin and writes music while having sex.
However, I found the movie to be rather plodding. There are some entertaining segments, but on the whole the movie just isn't interesting. There's either not enough development of the characters and situations that are interesting, or there's too much time spent with characters you can't possibly care about but are supposed to.
It's not a bad movie. It's well filmed and solidly acted. The cinematography is rather nice. However, the script just isn't worth all the effort put behind it.

yspak,
Joel and I see this movie quite differently. I think The Red Violin is an interesting and at times very touching movie. I don't know your sensitivity to sexual scenes, but I doubt you will find it offensive. I have the Canadian DVD and I have ordered the US version to get the improved picture and sound. The sound track is also excellent.

I saw this film in the theater and I thought it was wonderful. I went to see it without reading any reviews before hand and I was pleasantly surprised. I never found it "plodding" or boring. But I do admit it won't be for everyone

I loved this movie. A lot of people say that the Oxford story is the worst of them all. I didn't really notice this when I saw the movie and still don't really agree with it (they're all great!) but I suppose if you're worried about sexuality (which is in the Oxford story) you might like it the least.
It's really not all that bad. It has I think 3 scenes with nudity and sex, the longest of which lasts about 15 seconds (and it's not a porn, don't worry).

I just watched The Red Violin, and I would rank it as one of the best movies of 1999. A tremendously ambitious movie spanning 3 centuries, it is both stirring and sad. The narrative structure was superb. This movie should appeal to all drama fans.
One word of caution for those subtitle haters out there: Only about 1/2 of the movie is in English. The rest is in Italian, German and Chinese with English subtitles.
Oh, I watched the DTS version (the disc contains both DTS and DD5.1), and the sound was marvelous.
