I finally got the Canadian Heavenly Creatures release and there's good news and bad news.
The good news, of course, is this wonderful film actually has a DVD release. It's the true story of two friends who were, in their parent's opinion, too close to each other for their own good and what they did to try to ensure they could stay together. It's great film with marvelous performances (the first film with Kate Winslet, in fact), and fantastic direction by Peter Jackson.
However, it is Pan and Scan. It is definitely not open matte as that might be tolerable, but the shots definitely could not be matted. For the credit sequences the film is letterboxed and then it zooms in for most of the film. The transfer I would rate as average. It's better than VHS, but I wouldn't considder it an impressive improvement.
