I love a movie with beautiful cinematography and a story that raises more questions than it answers. The type of movie that is subject to interpretation. And one that cannot be easily described...So, what are your favorite films from this non-hollywood, artistic genre? Is there a movie out there that can only be described as BEAUTIFUL ?

Good question, RJason.

There are countless films I can think of that fall into the criteria you gave, but a more recent example that stands out to me is the French film "The Dreamlife of Angels." I first saw it a few months ago and it has stuck with me ever since. It was artfully written, directed, shot and acted.

Going by your qualifications, RJason, my favorite "artistic" film would have to be 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

It's not out on dvd yet....
and a terrible remake was made of it with
Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage, but
Wings of Desire is up there.

"Bloodsucking Freaks" from Troma. Just kidding. If you want beautiful cinematography, you`re not going to get much better than "Akira Kurosawa`s Dreams", not out on DVD yet but supposedly coming.

For cinematography, you may want to check out films by Robert Bresson, Yasujiro Ozu, Krzysztof Kieslowki, Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky. They definitely understand composition. The latter three have films on DVD: Tarkovsky's "Nostalghia" or "Andrei Rublev", Bergman's "Autumn Sonata", and Kurosawa's "Ran" are good introductions if you don't mind deliberately paced films.

DVDer...I saw "Dreamlife of Angels" upon your recommendation a couple of months back...It is a great example of the type of film I'm curious about. For some reason I was thinking that all Movie (ie..non-dvd, technical) threads should be in reviews. You know, the one place people can go to get ideas on their next title purchase. But, I am not as interested in reveiws as I am in title suggestions. So, feel free to move this topic...Thanks.

Anglagard...I have heard a lot about "Dreams", I can't wait to see this one. I haven't yet seen "Ran" either...I hear the transfer was subpar. Redshift, Filmmaker, & Neitzl thanks for the responses...I'm writing those down. My favorite films usually fall under the category..."The Best Films you've never heard of".
