I absolutely *love* TRON, but am concerned about the poor review of the transfer in the main review section. Has anyone else seen it? Is it really THAT bad? Should I wait for some kind of 'special edition' with the production stuff that was on the LD box? Boxers or briefes? Plaid or stripes?

I gotta know! http://forum.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif

aron.

If you absolutely love TRON, go on eBay and grab yourself a used laserdisc player. This is one of the best LD boxed sets ever made.

The film itself looks absolutely gorgeous (THX-approved, widescreen). The extras (deleted scenes, storyboards, character sketches, commentary, etc. etc. etc.) are great too. This is one of my most watched sets.

But, staying on topic, I've never seen the DVD. Wasn't particularly interested in it, since it is movie only.

Disney took a really long time to warm up to supplemental material on LD, but when they started doing it, they released some of the best sets ever. Unfortunately, they seem to be reverting back to no extras for DVD. Pity.

The transfer is pretty bad - it was one of the first DVDs I rented to see how an older transfer would look. I would like it in my collection (hokey as it is), but until they revamp it, no way!

But it's Tron! How could you not love Tron?
BTW the same people who made TRON already have a script and are in preproduction for TRON2... but I don't think all the new special effects can top the old skool FX which were amazing for the time.

re: bboisvert

I really do LOVE tron, but I cannot afford, nor can I justify dropping the cash for an LD player plus the $100 box set just for the one title. I would have a hard time putting up that much just for the box set (although I probably would w/ the online style 30% off plus a coupon). So yelling at Di$ney for a special edition seems to be the route to go...

Tron has a special place in my life - some friends of mine took me to see it on August 18, 1982. That was one week after my last dose of chemotherapy (ex-cancer patient) and I will always tie that movie to that event. I just thought Disney coulda done a better job and RESTORED the film, not just pressed an old print onto DVD. If they do come out with a special edition, I will pick it up, but looking at the sorry job they did with Roger Rabbit, I dunno.

aron,

I've got Tron on DVD and think that the transfer is watchable. It is certainly light years ahead of the one for the Highlander and is a better picture than you'd see on VHS.

If you're a fan of the movie, it's most likely worth getting the DVD.

Speaking of bad transfers. I recently bought the Alien Legacy box set and the transfer for "Alien" was borderline unspectacular. All the extras are nice, but. "Aliens" has an awesome transfer though, the lost scences were added nicely and give the movie a different feel. I haven't seen "Tron" on DVD though.

I haven't seen a great number of DVD's yet, so I may not be the best judge of transfer quality....but I thought Tron looked amazing! 10X better than any medium I have seen it in since 1982. Especially when you compare it to the Theatrical Trailer included on the DVD, you can see how grainy and hazey the film was. The difference is most obvious during the scenes inside the system. The LightCycle race looks as if it could have been made with recent technology.

Along with everyone else, my gripe is not enough extras!
