Can someone tell me if Hard Eight is a good film? I really loved Boogie Nights and am wondering if Hard Eight compares at all. Since it is coming soon to DVD.

Thanks

It compares, but only vaguely. Most people probably think Hard Eight is very slow, and for a long time nothing really seems to happen. But I found it quite enjoyable; its very well acted, scripted, and the plot is actually quite intricate once it starts to erupt.

It helped that Philip Baker Hall and John C. Reilly were my two favorite things in Boogie Nights. And Gweneth Paltrow is AMAZING in this movie, its like nothing she's done before or since. She play a rather stupid hoooker, and trust me, it works.

Hard Eight is a great slice of life movie (which means no traditionally structured plot, just a character examination, essentially) by Paul Thomas Anderson, the next greatest director. He was livid with the way that Sony made him cut the picture (the original title was Sidney, but he took the title off because of what Sony did to it), but even with the Sony cut, it makes a very good film. I am anxious to see a director's cut of Sidney!
