Has anyone seen the movie or DVD of Pi? Please post a review if you have.
Thanks in advance, Brian ------------------ My DVD's---> http://www.dvdtracker.com/~bricar.asp |
I saw Good Will Hunting and felt that movie was lacking detail on Ben Affleck's(SP?) characters understanding of mathmatics. I wanted them to show more of the math details. . . I said this to say that I saw Pi feeling that this would be a movie that did just that. It was possibly the worst movie that I have ever seen! It was obtuse, hard to follow, choppy in its cinematography, and character divelopment.
If you want this type of movie, then SEE THIS FILM! gwynnfan |
I've got to disagree. I was surprised at how good Pi was. I rented it one night, not knowing much about it. Likely many math details are poor (much of the computer stuff was inaccurate, though probably intentionally so). It was, however, a very good story and an intense film. The disc also includes a lot of extras and is well worth buying.
(For what it's worth I also loved Good Will Hunting, I guess I just don't care much about math details (: ). |
I think Pi is a fabulous movie. This is a very low budget movie and so the picture is very grainy but the transfer is excellent. The techno soundtrack is quite good too. A must.

I didn't like it. I never "cared" about the characters. Don't know why.

I have Pi. Loved it. I'm a filmmaker, though, and I might be more pre-disposed to enjoy this sort of project than a mainstreamer. Makes me think of all the Hullaballoo (Sp?) going on about The Blair Witch Project in the other forum right now. As a filmmaker, I'm inspired by movies like these, and I enjoy them as movies as well. But people raised on straightforward narratives, with little or no experience seeing or understanding movies from the likes of Lynch, Gilliam, Kubrick, Malik, etc., may not be as appreciative.
That reminds me. Run, don't walk, to see Run Lola Run, if it happens to play anywhere near you. Awesome movie. ------------------ ~epski http://www.dvdtracker.com/~epski.asp |
I loved it also.

gwynnfan: Dude are you talking about Matt Damon??? He is Will Hunting in the movie, not Ben Affleck, he is Chuckie, and he is a rough neck. Matt is the smart guy who knows how to solve that math, not Ben. Just FYI.

Epski,
I agree with you. As a filmmaker, it's sometimes difficult to make non-filmmaker friends appreciate more esoteric films like "Pi". For those with an adventurous attitude check it out. And "Run, Lola Run" is the best film I've seen this Summer. |
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, but my fiancee nearly had a nervous breakdown watching this. Really. It really freaked her out! It is truly unique. It gives one a fresh appreciation for drills. But, as with most things, not for everybody. Rent it.

Marcus Daly: I also agree that RLR is the best movie I've seen all summer. I have it down third on my list of favorite movies of the year, after Election (another more obscure choice) and The Matrix (one we can all agree on, it seems--I've got my pre-order in).

I watched Pi last night on IFC (Independent Film Channel) and was NOT overly impressed.
Sound: I liked the Techno music & the dialogue seemed to be clear & well placed for DD 2.0 Video: The video was a bit fuzzy (grainy) but gave a good feel to the picture. The lighting seemed overexposed a bit, but I guess that's part of the intentional feel. Filming style: The body cam in the subway was good as was the use of "flashing" to another scene. Story: I thought it had a good story line. Although it started out well, I found myself looking at my watch to see how much time was remaining before the end. It felt very repetitive (ala the 216 numbers) in many ways. Repeat viewing/Purchase: I will watch it once again to make sure I didn't miss anything critical. I may rent the DVD to view the extras. This may give me a better feel overall as well. A purchase is not likely for my collection. Overall: 2.5 out of 5 Forgive the pun, but it just didn't "add" up for me! Sonic |
Excellent movie, although the frenetic atmosphere makes it a little uneasy to watch but that is what is great about it. It kind of makes you feel like you have not slept in days while consuming 100 cups of coffee. It is about a mathematician losing hid mind trying to crack some code that could be a key to something very big. It is like BARTON FINK on speed. It also reminds me a bit of ERASERHEAD. I highly recommend it although it is not for every taste.

I had very high expectations when I rented this movie, and was a little let down. It was good, but not outstanding.
I agree with inri222 in that it has an odd pace like Barton Fink. I also found it similar to Jacob's Ladder in general tone. |
I bought the Pi DVD sight unseen mostly because of the good buzz surrounding this film. I thought I was going to have another classic like Fight Club or Being John Malkovich on my hands, but was slightly let down.
I agree about it getting repetitive towards the middle. I think they had to stretch to make this reach the 90 minute mark. But for all the other reasons others mentioned, this film is awesome. Great sense of style, interesting/original story, great performances, nice techno soundtrack (including an Orbital tune which I recognized right off the bat!), etc. The DVD is also filled with extras - and for $9.90 at deepdiscountdvd.com it was a no-brainer. I only wonder about the re-watchability since this is mostly a cerebral/suspense film, with virtually no action scenes and almost no humor. You watch it for the experience as a whole, not individual scenes. Eric |

The DVD can be had for about $10 so it might be worth it to give it a try.....

I give it 3.1415926535 out of 4 stars. :)

Maynerd that was pretty damn funny.

PI is great. If you like it, check out the directors newest movie Requiem For a Dream, which is excellent.
