I saw "Candyman" about a year ago on DVD (I rented it) and these were my impressions. The transfer looked good and the sound was good, too. The problem I had with the movie was the story--it was just silly and illogical. Now, I don't mind far-out stuff, but if things happen for no reason and characters do things that a normal "thinking" person wouldn't do, well, I start to lose respect for the film makers. Horror films often have characters doing stupid, illogical things (and I can accept this to a point), but "Candyman" had things in it that just didn't make any sense to me. I kept asking myself, "Why are they doing this?" Maybe "Candyman" is some sort of local (Chicago) legend and the things in the film are portraying what the local folklore is. I don't know...I didn't get it. For me, I was glad I rented this DVD instead of buying it.

Candyman is an excellent horror flick. It's based off Clive Barker's short story "The Forbidden" (from one of 'The Books of Blood')
It's about a university student who's doing a thesis on urban legends. When she learns of the Candyman tale (in the 1800s, a black man is tortured to death for loving a white woman. His hand is chopped off, and bees are allowed to sting him repeatedly.) Supposedly the Candyman is haunting a rundown apartment complex, so she investigates. Candyman sort of latches onto her and torments her through the flick, though you're never quite sure if he's real or she's just flipping out. Has some good gore (Candyman's severed hand is replaced by a hook, which he uses to gut people), good story IMO, and Tony Todd is great as the Candyman. The DVD itself looks good. Good transfer and sound. Both the 1.85:1 and P&S versions are included, but there's nothing extra but the trailer. It's one of my favorite horror flicks. Seen it about 10 times so far. There's two sequels, but they don't measure up to the original. -Jason |
I watched Candyman last night and I thought it was good but I really liked the Philip Glass score a lot better!!
