Hi I have the VHS version of this Tim Burton movie and was wondering if it was worth getting on DVD?

TIA for the input!

Nightmare Before Xmas has an outstanding video transfer. Very clean, very sharp. It is also widescreen (1.66:1). The real treat is the DD 5.1 audio mix. It is fanstastic, with plenty of activity on the surround channels. The musical numbers sound great. For these reasons, it is light years ahead of the VHS version. The only downer is the lack of extras: it only has a trailer.

Nightmare Before Christmas was one of the 1st 5 DVDs I bought, after I bought my player. If you're a fan of the film, you'd really appreciate seeing all the details Director Henry Selick put into every frame. You'll also get to hear the nice Danny Elfman score sweeter than ever here. Besides the lack of extras, I wish the film was pesented in a format of at least 2:1 or better. I wanted to see as much of the frame as possible...

1.66:1 was the aspect ratio of the original theatrical release. The DVD doesn't crop anything off.

You are correct, sir. I've long held that Nightmare Before Christmas shot in a wider scope, but when I read your post insisting it was 1.66:1, I consulted the chart in my trusty Widescreen Review and confirmed the fact. I stand humbly corrected. All the better for those who are thinking about the purchase of this great animated film...

This is the DVD I use to demo DVD picture - it is absolutely the best looking disc in my collection.

As for the trailer, it claims to include a theatrical trailer but it is actually a home video advertisement. Big whoop-de-doo!

Just thought I'd add that this is my favorite movie and favorite DVD. I can't get enough of the opening song. I adore the characters and the expressionist set.

I'd love to see a sequel where the little girl character grows up and tries to take over Valentine's Day. http://www.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif

An amazing disc. Get it. The picture and sound are so clear and sharp and the colors! WOW!

Yes! This is the current gold standard for Video Quality. I had it on tape and got the disc last month. This is hands down the best video quality I have seen on ANY disc yet.

This film is another of those reasons that I will never part with my laserdisc player.

While the DVD has little to no extras, the laserdisc set has commentary, deleted scenes, animation test footage, concept art, and a documentary. Not to mention that it also includes "Vincent" and "Frankenweenie" -- two great Tim Burton shorts.

I was disappointed to see that this material did not make it onto the DVD edition.

Yes, the laserdisc box set is wonderful, and as long as its extras remain unavailable on DVD, you'd have to pry my laserdisc player out of my cold, dead fingers.

Yesterday I ordered the DTS (laserdisc) edition (used; it's out of print), a few hours after ordering a DTS reciever. That'll be 3 editions of Nightmare Before Christmas for me! Now all I need is a way to watch the DVD while listening to the DTS laserdisc (yeah right....).
