I've held off getting the DVD of TWISTER because my main reason for getting it would be the teaser. The laserdisc has the teaser and the trailer, but I believe the DVD package only mentions the trailer. Does anyone know if the teaser (it goes to black after every shot) is on the DVD?

The teaser that you are looking for is the one included on the DVD. It starts out with an annoucer talking about nature being sane yet it sometimes goes completely mad. It then shows the opening sequence intercut with flashes of black. It ends with the famous shot of a tire being blown through a windshield.

Twister only has one trailer on it.

It starts off with a nice blue sky and a voice over. It mostly consists of scenes from the opening of the movie (Helen Hunt's character as a child in the Twister that sucked up her father). But it's shown like it's being lit by lightning. You'll see a brief scene and then they go to black, then like a long lightning flash you'll see another scene and then to black.

I don't know what was on the LD, but I hope this answers your question. If not you can post again or email me. I think my dad has the LD so if you like I could probably look at his copy later this week.

I have the CAV LaserDisc and my friend has the DVD. Sadly, he cannot watch the #2 trailer featuring the storm-chasers hiding from the tornado as it hits the drive-in movie theater (it is not a teaser--for the most part, teasers have little, if any, footage from the films they are advertising; they act more as atmosphere-setters), and I can. Additionally, I feel that TWISTER is one of those rare examples of a LaserDisc that looks better than the DVD (and I've read several reviews which concur. It's understandable--TWISTER was one of Warner's first DVDs) so, until Warner Home Video sees fit to give this title the Special Edition treatment, I'll happily keep my LaserDisc, and I recommend you do the same.

Filmmaker, I've held off on getting the DVD because I've wondered about the trailer question and just how high a quality the DVD would be compared to the laserdisc I have. I've got the CLV version and I'm pleased with it. Maybe I WILL wait until there's some kind of updated or special edition DVD. Why is TWISTER considered by many to be good for demonstration purposes?

But seriously, it is the truly enveloping effect of the digital audio track.

I still have to balance out my speakers (my surrounds are full size and much closer to me than my fronts) and this is the first movie that made me scoot forward because the sound from my surrounds was too loud!

Blade, you have got to go to Radio Shack and buy their cheep ($25-$30) spl meters. It will shock you how much better a balenced system sounds.

From what I understand, the 5.1 audio track on the DVD is phenomenal (thereby explaining why it's often touted for demonstration purposes), but I have no evidence that it is any kind of an improvement over the LaserDisc, which could easily peel paint off the walls of your home. As far as the DVD's picture goes, it is only so-so, and suffers from a lot of pixelization in my opinion, especially during the opening storm sequence. My friend, who owns the DVD, agrees. It's pretty decent, considering that it was one of Warner Home Video's first DVDs, but it is definitely a mark down from the LaserDisc, if you ask me. It's funny--when DVD debuted, I was one of its most fervent enemies. I thought it was an insidious, unimproved, and unnecessary replacement for the LaserDisc, which I had loved for years. I thought the only difference between a LaserDisc and a DVD was the size of the disc, which I didn't feel warranted the launch of a new format. Then, I saw the demonstrations for DVD at various electronics stores, and they always used TWISTER as the demo disc. Whenever I saw this, I would always say, "Whoop-dee-doo! My LaserDisc's got that beat by a mile! This DVD crap is gonna die before it even gets out of the gate!" Now, two years later, as my LaserDisc collection is being slowly sold off and my DVD collection is increasing exponentially, I get to eat crow and ask for seconds http://www.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif! Having said that, I still highly recommend holding on to that LaserDisc (surely you have dozens of other DVD titles you are interested in buying--concentrate on them for now) until Warner Bros. does this DVD right. I'm sure it's only a matter of time...

The way I did mine is I mounted the spl meter on a tripod in the sweetspot in the room. Right in front of the TV, equidistant from the left and right.

Set the receiver in setup mode, this causes the unit to produce a white noise to each channel one at a time. Then I adjusted the volume on each channel until the meter was the same for each channel. This included the sub.

But are you sure about the sub? Wouldn't that be too much? Are you running your mains large or small?

Also, according to Video Essentials, the best way to orient the level meter is pointing upwards and slightly forwards, say about 30 degrees forward of vertical. Don't just lay it flat.</font>
