I highly recommend the movie Dark Star. It started as a Film Student project for John Carpenter (The Thing, etc) and Dan O'bannon (Alien, etc.), and was eventually released as a feature length film.

It's corny and the effects are less than amazing, but it's definitely good for a laugh. O'bannon supposedly loosely modeled Alien after this project, so it's also interesting from that perspective.

It will make you wish you went to film school just to have that much fun!
