I would like some reviews of Apt Pupil,Stepmom,Patch Adams,Elizabeth, and Gods and monsters. Anyone seen those?

epski 04-27-99 02:47 PM

Really brief reviews on the movies I have seen:

Apt Pupil: Worth a rent, slightly elevated above a TV movie in terms of quality.

Elizabeth: Gorgeous. Should look great on DVD. A thrilling take on the great Queen. I may buy it, but I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it.

Sucks that I have yet to see Gods and Monsters, but I'll certainly rent it. I haven't heard one bad thing about it.

Stepmom and Patch Adams, on the other hand...

I don't plan to ever see either of those.

Haven't seen Apt Pupil or Stepmpm yet, but here's links to the others:

<a href="http://www.outermost.net/mra/e/elizabeth/">Elizabeth</a>
<a href="http://www.outermost.net/mra/g/gods_and_monsters/">Gods and Monsters</a>

Also another great review of Gods and Monsters can be found <a href="http://odyssee.cjb.net/reviews/movie/movie042499.html">here</a>.

I plan on getting Elizabeth on DVD when it comes out on DVD, but am hesitant to get Patch Adams. Elizabeth was a great movie and I think that Cate Blanchette's performance was better than that of Gwyneth Paltrow's. Gods and Monsters also had the performance worth of an Oscar. Sir Ian McKellan should have won the Oscar rather than Roberto Benigni. My $.02

More quick reviews.....

Apt Pupil- I saw this in the theaters and enjoyed it a lot more than everyone else seemed to. Great performances by Ian McClellan (That's gotta be spelled wrong)and Brad Renfro. And I give it credit for actually disturbing me at times...always a good sign. However, I recently rented it on DVD and found that I didn't enjoy it quite so much. Perhaps it's just one of those movies that only work for a single viewing. Or perhaps the first time I saw it I was just starving for anything even slightly intelligent.

Elizabeth-Maybe not the best picture of the year, but definitely better than the other nominees (with the exception of the incredible Thin Red Line, although I'm in the minority in finding that movie brilliant.). Geoffrey Rush puts in another great performance. The director has a nice visual style. But the movie really belongs to my future wife, Cate Blanchett, who definitely deserved the Oscar that went to Paltrow.

God And Monsters-Not quite as good as I was hoping, but I think that's only because my expectations were extremely high. However, the movie is still very good. Great performances and direction. And the last half hour is truly brilliant.

As for Stepmom and Patch Adams, I have no plans to see either. Never been a fan of Julia Roberts and, truth be told, Robin Williams is really beginning to annoy me.

Elizabeth is already on pre-order. I can't wait. A simple review would be to take "All The President's Men" cross it with "Shakespeare in Love" mix in a touch of the Merchant Ivory productions and you have one unbelievable film.

It was a magnificent film worth owning.

I was able to use a Coupon and get Elizabeth on PO for $14.99, the wife likes period films, and truth be told I'm starting to as well.

I Bought a movie I never thought I would tonight, Picked up the 2nd babe film for $9.99. I was'nt a big fan of this on in the theatres I really disliked the dark turn of the film compared to the 1st. But I'm given it another chance. It was an inventive, Piece for sure, still don't like the ripped off Mad Max ending however.

I haven't seen the DVDs of these films but have seen them in the theater and can give you a quick rundown on the quality of the movies themselves. Don't know what's happening as far as DVD extras are concerned.

Apt Pupil: A very so-so movie about a Nazi and a teen obsessed with him. The film tries to be a thriller that looks at the nature of evil, but it's not very thrilling. Ian McKellan gives an OK performance, but if you want to see him at his best watch Gods and Monsters.

Patch Adams: Somewhat predictable and panned by most critics but I still found it heartwarming. This film doesn't break any new ground but it tugs at the heartstrings.

Elizabeth: Best film of the bunch. A look at the young Queen Elizabeth. Of course, it plays with the timelines of history a bit but what historical dramas don't? Beautiful costumes, great acting and a compelling story. See it.

Gods & Monsters: Close second to Elizabeth. As I said before, McKellen is brilliant. The story, which peeks at the latter years of gay director James Whale, is wonderful. Cinematography is great, and the supporting performances are outstanding. This one wouldn't have been out of place among the Oscar contenders for best picture.

Missed Gods & Monsters
Apt Pupil - at times engaging, particularly Ian's and Brad's performances...but the novella seemed more disturbing. I don't know why, but it seemed to miss the boat.
Elizabeth is beautifully filmed and probably a better film with some background knowledge of that time period. Cate Blanchett deserved the award IMHO. Joseph Fiennes was robbed for not snagging at least a nomination for either this or SIL.
Just watched the Stepmom DVD with my family and thought it was far more amusing and interesting than I would have thought. It turns out to be darker than the preview lets on. I will say it was a tad long and overmanipulative, but Susan Sarandon in particular is very good.

Patch Adams: I am definitely in the minority it seems, but I really enjoyed this film and its message. A lot of people didn't like it. Rent it first.
