I enjoyed this one. It was a little slow at times and I was afraid it was going to become an Italian romance picture at one point but luckily the horror ramped up in the end. It has a nice mix of Frankenstein and Mystery Of The Wax Museum.
I can say one thing...the rapid time that the woman who played Elfie could go from looking exotically beautiful to looking like a corpse was frightening.
My rating: *** out of *****

I really enjoyed MotSW in the past so was excited to revisit it. The stately melodrama and slow burn psychological eerieness really works well especially early on. It veers into being painstaking slow at points but even then the weirdness gives it a subtle comedy especially with how driven mad the guest seeks or the smucky doctor. The mill is an effective and cool setting even more so in flames after comeuppance has been served to rousing music.

The first time I saw this was on a bad SD copy and I thought it was amazing. Funny but this viewing, on a stunning blu ray, I was less impressed. It's really a cross between a plot like Eyes Without a Face (1960), where a man is killing women in an attempt to restore his daughter/wife, and a plot about a "sculptures" that are made out of corpses (Bucket of Blood, House of Wax 1953). Since Eyes Without a Face also came out in 1960, it's hard to say who ripped off who, but I think there might have been earlier movies with that plot as well.
That said, I do really love the setting and find that unique. It seems to be set in the Netherlands with the wooden shoes and windmills. The romance sub-plot is pretty annoying. "You slept with me, therefore you're a tramp and I'm going back to my innocent childhood friend/love interest". But then, Elfie was a bit odd and immediately clingy.
As someone else mentioned, this felt long on this viewing. 3/5 stars.

This was ok.Watched in on Friday night. I don't watch a ton of old movies. Elfie was very beautiful. It dragged in parts. It was pretty obvious that things weren't going to go well for her and her father as soon as he kills the doctor.

I have to admit that some gothic stores are not my thing. I though the setting and scenery were great, I just didn’t love the story. The Arrow Limited blu looks really good, but I'm jut not a fan of this movie having seen it.
