These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

I feel like you can hear the pitch to the studio executives: It's Aliens ... on a boat! It really does steal pretty liberally from that film. It's that same motley crew against a monster while the true monster is the corporate one. Yada, yada, yada.

There are moments of good monster fun, but it came across too quippy, not to mention too familiar. The Joey character really got on my nerves. Sommers hit the tone much better in The Mummy.

The CGI monster might be the most convincing thing about this film. Its fun and upbeat but not fun or upbeat enough that it just feels generic rather than taking many necessary chances. I do wish the effects had been better and the creature more of a presence. Director Stephen Sommers usually takes lazy concepts with low hanging fruit ideas and turns them into semi-serious popcorn films like a low rent Michael Bay; Odd Thomas might be the film he has made that comes closest to working. It's a shame Deep Rising isnt the ballsy Lovecraft action epic we need.

Why does the theatrical poster give away the ending?

Kevin O'connor plays a startlingly different role here thab he did in Lord of Ilusions.

I always get this one mixed up with another speedboat movie, but this one sure is a lot of dumb fun.

Famke in another theme night movie. 'And you Miss, are no lady'.

It was not until Kevin J. O'Conner from Lord of Illusions started to speak, well whine, that I realized he was Beni in the Mummy.

CGI was decent in a few shots but mostly wonky -- '90s tech was fun to revisit though. Lots of water tank work in this film.

And now for some random trivia.
Wes Studi taught Kevin J. O'Conner how to play "Brown Eyed Girl" on guitar during shooting

This was a lot of fun. I figured I'd seen it before, back in the day, but not a thing was familiar so probably not.
Yeah, the CGI effects were plasticky looking. But there were some gnarly gross bits like the dude that comes out of the tentacle half-eaten. I really liked the scene where the thing first hits the ship and people are flying all over the ballroom. And the lady who hides in the toilet--lol. The best, though, was the bit where the leader of the bad dudes takes a pot shot at Pantucci just to be a jerk and then doesn't have a bullet left for himself as he's being eaten. I howled at that.

Not the best 90's horror-on-a-ship, but still fun. It was a lot of action-silliness I needed at this point in the challenge.

An okay watch. Treat Williams does a workman like job and the CGI is surprisingly good. The endless attempt at humor with the one liners all seemed corny and off the mark.

I watched this for the late, great Treat Williams.I missed watchig it last year for the challenge because I was on vacation.
I absolutely love this movie; it's a solid monster movie thar delivers on the thrills and kills with some comedic mometns. Anthony Heald who was so loathsome as the slimy prison director in Silence of the Lambs is equally great here, and Famke Janasen is terrific as the thief.
