I really like Halloween 2018 and I thought this was a huge step down.
It had a lot of kills, so that's something nice I can say.

I feel like the more I think about the movie, the more mixed I am about it. There's a part of me that really likes how they're tapping into events from the original movie and around those times, but I don't really love the story coming out. So, this is all about the cop and not Laurie? Huh?

For the most part, I'd agree. I like the idea of the town joining forces to battle Michael, but the execution left a lot to be desired. The whole "evil dies tonight!" thing came across as rather silly, and because apparently we need everything spelled out for us, we even get a line of dialogue about how Michael has turned us into the monsters now. Well, farmer Ted tried really hard anyway.

I thought this movie ranked around the Resurrection/Curse Of MM bad. Like so bad it was funny.
I found myself rolling my eyes at a ton of the dialogue and some of the actions made by the characters (as stated above) didn't always make sense. MM is a killing machine and there is some decent gore and kills in this but it is also filled with a lot of standard stuff and the usual MM random teleportation and hiding in closets.
This was a really stupid film but if you are a fan of the Halloween franchise, this is nothing new and what you enjoy about it. If you like movies like Jason X and Freddy's Dead, you will still enjoy this one. I honestly sat there wondering if the writers wrote it to be as silly and stupid as it is as a play on so many of the past movies in the series. But I doubt they were that smart.
I watched Halloween (2018) yesterday and it doesn't hold up very well either.
My rating:
As a slasher film - *1/2 out of *****
As dumb fun - **1/2 out of *****

People on the left calling Michael Myers homophobic, people on the right demanding they take out the firefighter scene, I was offended because they had him running in the 1978 flashback.

I am convinced that Danny McBride and the Director intended this to be a comedy. These guys are too good and too smart to just carelessly write stupid dialogue and stupid character decisions. I think it was intentional. The Big John picking up a small cheese knife ? lol. An old woman carrying an Iron in the mob scene. I think these guys were having a laugh as Ricky Gervais would say.

Too much gore, not enough Jamie, bringing legacy characters back just to have them make idiotic decisions and be killed, fast Michael, hilariously bad ending. 2/10 since I’m in a good mood.

Re: "Halloween Kills" Reviews/Discussion - 2021 Horror Challenge
really bums me out how so far removed from the original Halloween these movies have gotten.
Gone is the suspense, and dread. Instead we get the same old gore and blunt force trauma over our own heads. I hate so much that they turned him into Jason Voorhees.
I also think that maybe Judy Greer isn’t actually dead. Was that possibly a vision of hers. I hope so for one reason. How the fuck did he get in that house. It was crawling with cops and paramedics.
I’d put this at #6 in the series, but only because of the score. Otherwise it would have been bumped down a spot.
Halloween’78
Halloween 3
Halloween 2
H20
Halloween ‘18
Halloween Kills
Halloween 6
Halloween 4
Halloween 5
Zombie Halloween
Halloween 7
Zombie Halloween 2
Pros: Soundtrack was awesome, I dug his burnt look, it was nice seeing the legacy characters even though they just basically died. The flashback scenes, the H3 masks again.
Cons: The whole mob thing was so frustrating to watch. Laurie and Michael have zero scenes together, all the unnecessary gore and kills and why did it take everyone so long to figure out he was going home?
I really hope they add Tom Atkins in the next one.

The firefighter scene near the start is well done and interesting.
There are sooo many references to the original it starts to feel tired quickly. World building and elaborate continuity is the last thing Halloween needs. I think it was a mistake to bring Strode back in 2018 for that reason (leaning too much on rehashing the original) and I dont understand the weird Jamie Leigh Curtis worship. (Admittedly I think even the original Halloween is over rated).
I like the idea of two survivors from the first film reflecting on this in a hospital room decades later as a segment but not as a main plot.

I really liked this one. I've already seen it twice, and I feel like watching it again tonight. Especially watching it back to back with Halloween '18. The continuity with the two movies is excellent. It feels like one long movie.

I liked seeing all the original actors from the original film, and the "townspeople fight Michael" theme was cool. Jamie Lee Curtis is always a delight. The gay couple who bought the Myers house were the best part (never, ever buy a serial killer's house.) Big John and Little John. Classic. But it just seemed to not quite mesh for some reason. The last quarter of the film was good. I have the feeling this is one that will get better with age. 6/10.

To give credit where credit is due, though, the lighting of the film was gorgeous--it was especially nice when they were looking for Lindsey in the park.
But otherwise, I can't wait for Halloween Ends to finish off this cycle of films. Let it go already.
My subset film rankings for the Challenge thus far:
1. Battle Royale
2. Carrie (1976)
3. Curse of the Demon
4. Freaky
5. Evil Dead II
6. Slither
7. Possessor Uncut
8. The Ninth Gate
9. Tower of Evil
10. Witchfinder General
11. A Bay of Blood / The Spiral Staircase (averaged together)
12. Planet Terror
13. Silent Madness
14. Slumber Party Massacre II (based purely on its out-of-left-field aesthetic)
15. In Search of Darkness
16. Opera
17. The Gate
18. Road Games
19. Daughters of Darkness
20. Triangle
21. The Untold Story

Maybe because I watched this late on Halloween night and had too much caffeine, but I liked it. Yes, some of the dialogue was clunky, and yes, it was pretty lame to bring original characters back just for stupid decisions, but I just had a ton of fun with this.
