Re: "Grave Robbers" (Ladrones de Tumbas) Reviews/Discussion - 2021 Horror Challenge

If you like hearing constant screaming, then this is the movie for you! Seriously...drink a shot every time you hear a scream (male or female) and you will be dead before you are halfway through. Make it to the second half alive and you will be out robbing a grave by the end of it.

This movie was decent though. Nothing special but a decent way to pass time. Some good and some bad cheap gore effects are what holds this film together. It moves at a decent pace once it gets started but still failed to really enthuse or excite me.

I had to watch a crummy upload of this on Youtube. I saw some clips on a review of the VS Blu-ray release after I watched it and the clips looked 1000 times better than the stream I watched. It probably would have made the movie a little more enjoyable but I am glad I didn't buy it. I miss the VS Exploitation.TV streaming channel they used to do. I can understand why the chunked it but it was a great way to watch the best versions of films like this without investing the extra dough in the Blu-ray.

Any way...if you have the Blu-ray, that is definitely the way to watch this. No rental streams that I could find. This wasn't great but there have been way worse movies I have watched this month so far.

My rating: **1/2 out of *****

I remember they made a comment about getting out of the streaming business. Something about how it was a bigger challenge and out of their wheelhouse and they are just going to stick to what they do best and partner with streaming providers. So it struck me as maybe running the service wound up being too much overhead for what they were making. Having an extra department for backend, web, apps, etc.

You weren’t kidding about the screaming. Good Lord. I’m glad I live alone and my cat is deaf.

So I'm about 20 minutes into this and if nothing else, the soundtrack is fun so far.

Ha, the screaming.

The atmosphere was great and I loved the cheap looking but just effective enough creature effects; I wish there was more monster carnage and it seemed like too often there were fleeting glimpses of the mummy (?). Overall serviceable but not great; glad I got to watch it.

Who knew Spanish graves were so ripe with riches? Good thing Graves Robbers never seemed to be popular or graves everywhere might have been in danger of teenage looting.

So near the end, that screaming became pretty overpowering. I still enjoyed it, despite the screaming and flaws. Fun idea, fun effect, and some fun music for parts of the film.

Half satanic film, half slasher. This Mexican horror flick does a great job of blending two genres with alot of good kills. Acting was shaky, but that might be due to the english language track.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I didn't get much out of this. The plot was an amalgamation of cliches (Satanist killed decades ago comes back), all of which have been done better. Low production values, bad acting.... The most irritating thing to me was that the women in the film did nothing but stand around and scream. Not a single backbone among them. I guess it's a macho culture, but that really got old.

I gave this a 3 out of 5. Nothing new but I was reasonable entertained. Horror was going downhill in the USA by the late 80s (especially with MPAA censorship) and this certainly compares favorably with American slashers at the same time. I didn't think I saw this before, but the jail cell scene seemed really familiar to me.

I concur with jholmes's assessment. To be fair, the film wasn't boring, but it wasn't good, either. The influence of A Nightmare on Elm Street rears its ugly mug yet again via the weirdo stucco wall hands in the jail cell, and Alien and/or Evil Dead was/were well-represented in that scene, too. Still, the movie that it reminded me of the most that kept popping into my head was Giant from the Unknown. Maybe it was the axe. Give me Santo in The Diabolical Axe (El Hacha Diabolica) any day over this film.

My subset film rankings for the Challenge thus far:

1. Carrie (1976)
2. Slither
3. Witchfinder General
4. A Bay of Blood / The Spiral Staircase (averaged together)
5. Silent Madness
6. Slumber Party Massacre II (based purely on its out-of-left-field aesthetic)
7. Road Games
8. Grave Robbers (Ladrones de Tumbas)
9. The Severed Arm
10. Cutting Class

I liked this one all right. There was some good low-budget effects and it kept me entertained until the end. The Blu-ray did look pretty darn good.

Re: "Grave Robbers" (Ladrones de Tumbas) Reviews/Discussion - 2021 Horror Challenge

Agree with most of the above. Wasn’t without redeeming qualities, and kept me engaged, but the screaming and poor acting bring it down a couple notches.

Stealing rbrown’s subset ranking idea:

The Phantom Carriage, 8/10
Carrie, 8/10

The Spiral Staircase, 8/10
Slumber Party Massacre 2, 7/10
A Bay of Blood, 7/10
The Frighteners, 7/10

Road Games, 7/10
Slither, 7/10
Witchfinder General 7/10
Cutting Class, 6/10

Silent Madness, 5/10
Grave Robbers, 5/10

The Severed Arm, 4/10

Re: "Grave Robbers" (Ladrones de Tumbas) Reviews/Discussion - 2021 Horror Challenge

There's a lot to like here, mostly the kills and the effects, but there was way too much screaming. Digging up a dead Satanist who starts killing teens is not exactly original, and the movie wore out its welcome toward the end On the plus side. Agustin Bernal who played the executioner was a smoking hot muscle daddy!

Re: "Grave Robbers" (Ladrones de Tumbas) Reviews/Discussion - 2021 Horror Challenge

The practical effects along with the hallowed ax keeping the executioner in check were a nice touch but it got tedious especially with the screaming as others have said. Not bad but not good either, kind of the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm agua.
