Re: "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" Reviews/Discussion - 2020 Horror Challenge

[Spoilers]

Autopsy of Jane Doe is a brillant film; taking place with only two real characters in basically one room it's premised filled with such cryptic mystery and gore from the go. I'd seen Autopsy before but even after this viewing it left me feeling a little unsettled. I'm not entirely sure about the 'end reveal' when Brian Cox, who carries the film, seems to just announce that the "witch" wants to revisit the autopsy on the morticians as a form of revenge because she has become an instrument of countering torture inflicted on witches by revisiting it on the tormentors [great idea but way out of the blue]. I think it's hard hitting that the two characters are hard working sympathetic honest people suffering their own loss, not at all bad guys or deserving comeuppance. One of the best things about this film is that it generally resists explaining much and the implied backstory [witchcraft is a theory, the flower and burns and scars never quite add up, nevermind the body found in a cellar of a murder suicide suggesting so much behind the scenes]. The suggestiveness and growing sense of doom is excellent.

Was it implying that because the son did not y-incision flay open the dad stabbing him instead to end the pain they both died rather than release the curse? - which might match the 'Open Up your Heart and Let the Sunshine In' reoccurring song.

Nice reference to storm being a hallucination at the end.

One of the best recent horror movies.

This was a rewatch for me. I think it's a solid film. I appreciate the mystery of it and the investigation into it. In the end, I think the film sort of rests on its actors. After all, there's essentially only two people (not including the body), but they're both good. Cox is always excellent.

I saw this Nov 2017, but I'm looking forward to watching it again tonight with my husband. I loved it on first viewing. The whole death industry is morbidly fascinating to me, so the concept of a horror movie based around an autopsy hooked me. And I remember it being super suspenseful and creepy--and original. Good subset pick.

A solid, creepy film. I love the claustrophic setting of the morgue and I like how the film explains the events.

I really enjoyed this it's creepy and it was a solid mystery of what was causing the events to happen.

I dug this as well. I thought Hirsch would bug me since I hated Freaks so much. This was much better.

I had kept on putting off watching this one, in the hope it would be chosen for a theme night. Through the years, I've heard good things, and I think the wait really paid off. I love the slow build with the explosive last third.

I'm assuming the deaths that preceded the morgue, were the people finding here buried in the basement?

That's also how I took it - that the deaths at the start of the film were caused by Jane Doe but while it's supremely cryptic and eerie that 'the body was found under the house' I'm not sure that jives with the explaination in the morgue (that Jane Doe is revisting the torture she is subjected to on others)... I think those house deaths were gunshots. It may be this inconsistency makes the film even more creepy in casting doubt on the explaination at the morgue and leaving a subtle element of no one knows. Maybe they killed themselves when the supernatural started (?).

That was my understanding too. The police noted no forced entry with the victims apparently trying to get out of the house. That being said I would want an interior stairwell for egress when the elevator does not work and cellar door is inaccessible.

They may have perceived intruders when it was each other they were shooting. For some reason the body was unearthed and bad things happened.

I figured out Jane Doe early on but movie played out well and I enjoyed it. Good subset pick TheBigDave.

This is one prequel I could get behind.
