Though rougher around the edges than later Jean-Pierre Melville masterpieces such as Le Samourai (1967), Le Cercle rouge (1970), and Un flic (1972), Bob le flambeur (1956) remains, however, a seminal French crime film, a favorite of directors as varied as Stanley Kubrick, Claude Chabrol, and Quentin Tarantino. It was Melville's first film in the genre, and considered a precursor to the French New Wave that would emerge before the decade was out. However, those alleged proto-New Wave flourishes are probably as much the result of the extremely low budget and piecemeal production, the film shot over a two-year period. Near the end of the picture the protagonist's hair even changes color and length: it's slicked back and almost white in an exterior shot as he steps into the backseat of a car, but in the next shot, from inside the vehicle, it's significantly darker and much short...Read the entire review »
