Attending a theatrical showing allows you to obtain a bonus entry. If you missed a day, this means you can still check off the subset list as being complete.
The same goes for attending a live event such as a horror convention, haunted house, play, ghost tour, etc. You have one.

These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

My discount theater choices are limited to Ghostbusters and The Purge: Election Year, both coming later this month apparently.

I watched Don't Breathe today and for me it was outstanding. I love anything involving Rob Tapert or Sam Raimi so it was automatically at the top of my list. It may be my favorite horror film this year, which is really saying something. I paid $8.49 a pop when normally I only go to the theatres on half-price days (or before noon) or go to Imax 3-D for Marvel movies (and those are always before noon). I think it was a bargain at $8.49. If you haven't seen it why haven't you?

RiffTrax are doing Carnival of Souls on Halloween, so we're aiming for that...

I wanted to see a theatrical movie so with Don't Breath and Blair Witch vanished I settled on Ouija: Origin of Evil. It's a prequel to the lukewarm at best Blumhouse film Ouija. It tells the backstory from the first film with more detail in a 50s-60s period setting. I think it'd be better to see Origin of Evil first because the main plot is no surprise if you've seen the original. Narrative advancement is hardly the point anyway - there are some effective PG13 scares and imagery making OoE superior to the original and a fair genre film. It's a cool premise that exploits the apperance if childhood innocence to menacing effect but some of the theme feel a little spot on to films like Annabelle or Insidious 2, a series of 50s-60s era prequels related to similar supernatural events and other formulaic tropes. OoE ends up being slightly better than average, worth seeing.

Caught up with Don't Breath and really enjoyed it - went in blind and it was nothing like I expected but once I adapted to that it's a very tense movie with some clever directing and just wicked enough premise to seem plausible.

Re: "Theatrical Showing" Reviews/Discussion - 2016 Horror Challenge: Bonus Day

Nothing was fitting the theme nights when I checked, so I had resigned myself to skipping a theatrical horror viewing this October. I was ok with missing the optional checklist subset wildcard, as I will watch the other 33 selections; and I was even ok with not seeing a film in the theater for the first time since discovering dvdtalk challenges. But then I realized that I've probably seen a scary movie in the theater each October of my life, or since age 5 or so at least. So checking the theater listings again, I see that Ouija will fit tonight's theme, so I think I'll go for it.

^ Was surprised to really enjoy it. This kind of possession scares always get me, I was cringing in my theater seat throughout. The atmosphere helped, as it was a midnight showing; had a near panic attack as I walked alone through the parking lot afterwards, the shopping center playing the Halloween theme music.
