These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

MAIN THREAD | LIST THREAD

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags are unnecessary in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF SPOILERS.

If you end up being a fan of White Zombie then Kino Lorber just announced a blu-ray restoration release in January 2013, Amazon pre-order.

Awesome awesome awesome. This is such an overlooked film of the period in my opinion.

It's also public domain, so it can be found everywhere.

This film seems to have become an October tradition for me. I saw it for the first time during a previous horror challenge and have watched it every year since; the short runtime certainly doesn't hurt. I have to admit that the first I watched it, the movie left me sort of cold. Maybe it was all the buildup to finally seeing it. Regardless, I found it boring, but each time I have revisited it, I have found a greater appreciation for it and now really enjoy it.

Oh, good news regarding the Blu-ray announcement.

I'll always have a soft spot for this one thanks to it's opening titles/music.

'twas fine, but didn't quite impress me as much as other classics of the period. Some of the sets were atmospheric and cool, but I don't think it had enough to push me into a recommendation. I'm happy it was a short run-time, though and it added some variety to my checklist for the challenge.

I think this one gets better with repeated viewings. I honestly like it as much as Dracula.

Thought it was ok. Evil guy makes zombies slave to work for him and also makes a zombie girlfriend. Evil guy is killed by his own creation and zombie girlfriend lives forever eating brains or maybe she was cured by the power love. I'm not really clear on the ending because zombie girlfriend ends up talking and zombies can't talk in this movie. Hmmm maybe the evil guy was Dracula and zombie girlfriend is really vampire girlfriend.

Yep. I like this one more each time I view it; and like the original Dracula less each time I see it.

Starting with a positive note, I love the music at the beginning fits the movie so well. I also think bela does a good job in this. I too thought it was just alright nothing fantastic. I think I expected too much for the first viewing but may give it another chance in the future. I will be seeing bela in dracula for the first time as we get closer to halloween so I look forward to seeing what I think of that.

Same here. White Zombie is a rich atmospheric film that suffers from Lugosi's silly over the top acting at times (Bela is over-rated imo) but saved by more complicated thought provoking themes. I wonder how White Zombie ended up in the public domain.
