DVD Talk review of 'Space: 1999: Season 1' (Blu-ray)

I read Stuart Galbraith IV's DVD review of Space: 1999: Season 1 at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=45327 and...

Stuart, I would agree with most of your assessment about Space: 1999 except that Frieberger's season didn't make the second season more entertainment (at least to me) just narratively more linear and simplier.

By the way you failed to mention that "The Metamorph" IS included as an extra on the fifth disc (unlisted) which I think is important because you can contrast the approach between the two superivising producers over two seasons.

Thanks for noting this; I somehow missed this but it's now noted in the review.

The second season is a few notches cheaper and, as you say, narratively simplified, but I stand by my opinion that it's also a bit more entertaining, less frustrating and sleep-inducing. Plus I like the addition of Catherine Schell (in her day surely one of the most beautiful women on the planet) and Tony Anholt.

Nice review, Stuart. As a longtime fan, I pretty much agree with your assessments of both the strengths and weaknesses of the show. As you mentioned, the sort of emotionless, bleak vibe to the show (whether intentional or not) does give it a unique feel, IMO. Also, I really like the "weird" factor that's present---unlike a lot of the later Star Trek series, in Space:1999, space, aliens and other planets are REALLY alien, trippy and bizarre. I wouldn't argue that it's one of the best sci-fi series ever made, but it's strange atmosphere has always made it compelling to me.
