These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 Films in 31 Days Subset.

Main Discussion Thread | The List Thread

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags are unnecessary in these discussion threads, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF SPOILERS.

I really enjoyed this one. Wasn't expecting much, had never heard of it before, was pretty surprised that I liked it from beginning to end.

Nice creature effects, decent enough acting, nice character growth/change on the lead baddie, and good tension throughout. I'd give it a 7 or 7.5 out of 10.

Thanks tarfrimmer!

A surprisingly effective little thriller, Splinter is one of those films that I would never have watched without some prodding. After all, at first glance it looks like every other movie on SyFy and/or Chiller. Luckily, it has a lot more going for it than I had supposed. Like The Devil's Backbone last night, I was immediately hooked by an actor; only in this case, it was by ALL of the cast. And I think that's what sets this film apart from others of its ilk--exceptionally fine acting from everyone involved. I'll be checking this one out again real soon.

Creepy 'creature' feature for sure. I loved the sporadic, unnatural way the parasite twisted the host body as it manipulated it around. I kept waiting for the guy to stick his finger in his mouth the way Stephen King did in Creepshow. LOL. From what I saw of some of the artwork, I thought this was going to go the way of Little Otik or some druid mythos, but was pleasantly surprised that it traveled it's own path, sprinkling a few zombie and Evil Dead breadcrumbs along the way.

This was a surprise enjoyment since I hadn't heard of it before. The story does a great job of actually building up the characters and the creature effects are top notch and not overshown.

I saw this movie about a year or so ago and remember liking it quite a bit, but I'm having trouble remembering a lot of the specifics of it. May have to give it another watch sometime soon.

I caught a surprisingly positive review of this on At the Movies when it first came out and made sure to add to my list for the 2009 challenge. Their description of the creature, though, left me with an impression of an evil porcupine. I was pleasantly surprised that was not really the case. :)

Small and enjoyable cast of characters and creepy creature effects. Enjoyed it just as much this year, too!

I liked this more than I thought I would. Loved the splinter effects. Seems simple, but executed well. Great pick.
