Which Lethal Weapon Set ?
 

I love the Lethal Weapon movies (mainly the first two) and was looking for them on dvd and found this, a Complete Series box set on Amazon.com

I also see that there are director's cuts/special editions of each movie. I would like to know if anyone has the director's cuts/special editions and the Complete Series box set. What are the differences ? Which would you recommend ? Or should I just wait for a blu-ray set....if one ever comes out ?

Your best bet is probably to go with the 4 Film Favorites set. It's got the entire series, including Director's cuts on the first three as far as I know, and it's usually $10 or less. For whatever reason Lethal Weapon has never been given a decent release. They just keep rereleasing the same old discs in different configurations.

You could wait for Blu-Ray if you prefer, the first two are out already, but who knows when or if they'll get around to doing all four. The way this series has always been treated it will probably be a subpar release anyway.

You can also pick up the first two on HD DVD for fairly cheap. I'm pretty sure the Blu versions are identical to the HD DVD ones.

I bought them on HD DVD and will buy the third and fourth on Blu if they're ever released, otherwise I'll be happy with the 4 film collection on SD DVD to watch the last two movies.

The amazon listing says the 4 film favorites is only 2 discs. So LW4 must me missing all the extras because the individual release a double sided disc with the movie on one side and the extras on the other.

Warner did the same thing with The Fugitive/U.S Marshals; US Marshals is missing all the extras because its a double sided disc.

Parts 2 & 3 only add in just a few minutes, but I can't remember how meaty those minutes may have been. The first film, however, includes a few additional scenes, including

Also, i would recommend the WB 4 Film Favorites collection. All four films are on 2 double-sided discs, in a standard amary case. No snappers, and saves a lot of shelf space. You can find this at most B&M stores for roughly $10.

I know I don't post here much, but aren't the need for spoiler tags a little unnecessary? I mean the movie is 22 years old.

I don't buy flippers if I can help it. I guess I'll keep researching. Anyone know of the specifications of the complete series box set ? I haven't been able to find much out. By the way....what's B&M ?

sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine...

Just because a disc is dual sided, doesn't make it a "flipper".

I haven't seed an actual "flipper" disc in quite a long time. Even now, most long movies are on 2 dual layered discs.

Um....yes it does make it a flipper. What else would you call a dvd that you have to flip over to use the other side ? Just because a dvd doesn't have to be flipped over to completely watch the movie, doesn't mean it's not a flipper. (c'mon, it's been 11 years of dvds. Can you still believe that they're so cheap to make dvds on flippers ?) If you have to flip a dvd over to see either the rest of the movie or to see extra features, that makes it a flipper. Plain and simple.

It's funny these films have never been given a special edition version along with the Road Warrior & Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

They were top-notch, influential & financially lucrative action films for their time, certainly on par with the Die Hard series and yet get treated like Steven Segal or Chuck Norris action films as far as their DVD treatment.

It's not necessarily cheapness, it's convenience. The 4 Film Favorites comes in a single, standard-width case, and you get all four Lethal Weapons.

Flipper = You need to flip the disc to watch the whole movie...Not simply a dual sided disc.

ONE Movie split among two sides = flipper
Movie on one side / extras, or other movie on other side = Not a flipper

"My Bloody Valentine" is flipper with 2D on one side and 3D on the other. horrible, horrible movie btw.

not recent, but one i have in the que right now is "V: The Original Miniseries".

I would call it a win-win. The studios can produce the 2 double-sided discs for cheaper than four single-sided discs as well as save labour & transportation costs and increase their volume of titles sold.

The buyer wins because you get four movies for dirt cheap ($2.50 a movie!) and the added convenience of 4:1 storage on your shelf.

in my mind a flipper would be discs like the first releases of
Terminator 2 judgement day,StarGate,Total Recall,Chaplin etc where right smack in the middle of the movie you had to flip it over(and it was usually right in the middle of big scene to.)

thats a flipper movies that have extras on one side feature on the other are just double sided discs.

Hum...no. A "flipper" disc is only a disc that has HALF the movie on 1 side of the disc. and you then HAVE to flip the disc to watch the rest.

Extras on the b side of a dual sided disc is just like having a second disc. But instead of taking the disc out of the case, you turn the disc over.

The "flipper" concept goes back to Laserdisc days, when most movies were spread over multiple sides...some players could read both sides without the user needing to "flip" them. But most of us had to get up and manually "flip" the disc.
