DVD Talk review of '2010' (Blu-ray)

As a longtime Arthur C. Clarke fan, I found it illuminating that the reviewer's favorite parts of the movie seemed to be passages that were lifted almost verbatim from the novel 2010: Odyssey Two (Curnow and Max's initial exploration of Discovery, Chandra's discussions with SAL and HAL, and the stuff with David Bowman and HAL on Earth and around Jupiter).

While 2010 is a fairly entertaining movie, I can't help but wonder how much better it could have been if Hyams had been even more faithful to the source material. In particular, Hyams deleted an entire subplot from the book about a Chinese expedition to Jupiter that arrives before the Leonov, with disastrous results for its crew. I have a feeling that would have gone over better than the unlikely political scenarios Hyams worked into the script.

BTW, I'm a longtime reader of DVDTalk but a first time poster. Hope you all don't mind my chiming in.
