DVD Talk review of 'Howard the Duck - Special Edition'

I read Brian Orndorf's DVD review of Howard the Duck - Special Edition at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=36388 and I couldn't agree more. I just saw this film and I too found it to be pretty damn horrid, despite the special effects in the end.

Re: DVD Talk review of 'Howard the Duck - Special Edition'

Actually the reason why I saw this movie was out of curiosity after watching the Nostalgia Critic's review (in his website "That Guy With The Glasses") on this movie, which he states:

"For all the strange things George Lucas has done, whether it be bad (Star Wars: Clone Wars), unnecessary (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) or...just downright racist (Jar Jar Binks), nothing compares to the wierd cinematic bomb that he actually made the strange choice of producing: "Howard the Duck".

But after watching the film I can't really blame Lucas, but I can now see why he shunned this film. I might as well rent the Special Edition DVD just to view the extras.

I plan on picking it up for nostalgia alone -- watched this countless times while growing up and have not seen in years.

Funny how Lucas gets the blame for the movie, even though he only executive produced it. Meaning primarily that he backed the film, but didn't have a whole lot to do with the day to day creative process. It's like blaming Spielberg for Men In Black II.

Really? I liked it. I recently watched it on Hulu for the first time and I thought it wasn't to bad. Not something i'm gonna buy, but it was a fun movie.

This just goes to prove that ANYTHING ever made will eventually get a "Special Edition" treatment regardless of quality.

And yet my favorite bomb, "Ishtar", is still not available. *sigh*

Are you not aware of the allure of notoriously bad cinema? There was a huge demand for this DVD. "Regardless of quality?" Let me tell you something, it's because of this film's notorious stinker status that it's getting a special edition. This ain't uninspired forgettable drivel like Ballistic: Ecks vs Severs or Saving Silverman. The average bad movie DVD doesn't have featurettes where principle members of the cast & crew talk about the movie's failure. (this was especially fascinating on the Caligula commentaries)

No, we're lucky that Lucas didn't destroy the negatives & try to hide all traces of this Duck.

I hope more notoriously bad bombs come out of the DVD closet. Here's looking at you, Ishtar!
