What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
Ok, my sister has been asking me this question over and over. Her and her boyfriend have been watching horror/slasher films in the past month and she tells me that nothing really makes her jump. So, she wanted to know what was a great scary/horror movie they could watch next. The only film that gives me the creeps is the original Exorcist.
I thought I could ask you guys and gals for recommendations on your best Horror film experience. Thanks..:helpme: |
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
That's a big question. If I could name one movie it would be Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. I don't think anyone could go wrong with that.
For a more unusual recommendation I would suggest the Japanese version of Dark Water. |
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
The Strangers - Not a pleasant movie, but that's why it works.

Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
Tell her to watch Audition. If the end of that movie doesn't make her cringe, nothing ever will.

Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
Halloween & The Thing. Both by John Carpenter.
|
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
As far as just plain scary, nothing tops The Exorcist for me. If they are just looking for shock, try The Men Behind the Sun which is a Chinese made film about Japanese prison and torture camps.

The Descent... one of the best horror films from the past ten years :)

I say have her watch Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door. It's one of the most disturbing movies I've seen. |
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
I always liked the original Salems' lot.
|
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
What movies have they been watching? If we know what they don't find scary, we may be able to better steer them in the right direction.

Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
The last four films to actually frighten me were
The Strangers The Descent Pulse [Kairo] - original Japanese version Shallow Ground - 2004 Sheldon Wilson flick Shallow Ground actually gave me goosebumps. I think it's the most underrated horror movie of the last 10 years. |

Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
I'll throw out one that doesn't get enough respect..."In the Mouth of Madness"
and you can never go wrong with the original "Texas Chainsaw Masscre" But if she is looking for a movie to make her "jump" I don't think she is really interested in horror. Cheap scares don't equate to a scary movie. Just hide behind a door or the couch and surprise her if that's what she is looking for. |
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
Nic Roeg's Don't Look Now has to be right up there.

But that's where Jack Bauer came from.
Thats only a story they tell young terrorists to make them think that Bauer is only human. But we know better. |
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
The shining and exorcist are timeless
Decent has some jumpy moments Girl next Door is just disturbing. Weird, but the less violent American Crime was much more disturbing to me. Strangers is pretty good. But only involves 2 victems. On the same level as Vacancy Try some foreign films like: Audition(mentioned already, but slow and boring until the climax) High Tension Fronteirs Eden Lake(just picked up, but reviews were good) |
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
I was going to recommend High Tension, but a lot of people decide not to watch it once they learn it's in French. Though, there is very little dialogue throughout the movie :)
Wicked ending. |

Wicked ending. Check out Fronteirs. I liked it better then High Tension |
Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
Eden Lake is quite good but it's rather thriller.

Re: What is the best Horror DVD to watch?
If you want something thats very creepy and atmospheric, here's a title you don't hear too much about: The Legend of Hell House. Very spooky haunting flick from the 70's with a great cast (Roddy McDowell!).
