Paul Mavis's DVD review of The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians states that Darkseid was created to give the action figure line (which inspired the show) a Daerth Vader-like villain. Clearly, Mr. Mavis does not realize that Darkseid was created by jack Kirby in the early 1970s, well before this incarnation of Super Friends debuted or was even planned (in fact, the character of Darkseid actually pre-dates Darth Vader).

A little more research next time, I think?

Thanks for the additional information on that -- even with the snotty rejoinder at the end of your post! (I love snotty rejoinders myself :)) As I wrote in the review (or at least I think I wrote it), I'm no expert on this particular line -- either the show, the toys or the comic.

My original point in the review was the character was given such prominence in the show, to give the Kenner toy line a suitably popular villain -- after all, all of the people interviewed on the bonus featurette say this particular TV incarnation was produced solely for the purpose of selling toys. And since the Star Wars action figures were so big, a big villain was needed to anchor the line.
